Move Favorites and Addy Book into IE and OE

I have a clean XP install on my laptop and would like to get my favorites and address book from a CD that has the entire program files from my previous Windows 98SE OS. Is it possible to get the address book and favorites from that CD into my new XP installation? If it is, I'll need complete instructions because I'm new at this.

Thanks,

Hank

Favorites is easy enough: Just copy and paste the CONTENTS of the old Favorites folder to XP.

How did you save the address book from Windows 98SE?

RayH,

How do you know which folder is the favorites folder? It's not labeled as such.

To answer your question, I just copied the entire C:/program file to disk. That file includes the OE and IE folders. Anyway that's what I have.

Sure do hate to lose this. Should have found out how to handle this before I got rid of 98.

Hank
Hope it's okay if I post this...

Your favorites folder will be located under: C:\Windows\Profiles\Username (with username being the name you use to log on with) on the CD which you copied the files to.

Under the 'Username' folder you will see folders labeled 'Desktop', 'Favorites', etc. You can simply copy the contents of these folders and paste them into their like-named folders under C:\Documents and Settings\Username in Windows XP.

As for the address book, what email program are you using? If it's Outlook, then it will be a little more involved but you will be able to get it transferred.

If you still have questions, please feel free to ask!

Hope that helps,

LW

LiVeWiRe,
Thanks for the help.
I'm really embarrassed that I'm not catching on here. Let me tell you exactly what I have. I have a CD that I copied the folders "Internet Explorer" and "Outlook Express" to out of the C:\Program Files in Windows 98SE. I also have a removable hard drive in my laptop that I used Norton Ghost to make an image of the C drive when the C drive had Windows 98SE on it. Ghost didn't make an image that I could start up the computer on so that part was missing. All the other folders are there including the entire Program Files folder.

When I open the Internet Explorer folder on the CD or the second hard drive I have folders named FIWIE, HMMAPI.DLL, IE4.DLL ie5dom, etc. You get the idea. When I type in C:\Windows\Profiles\ (Here I didn't use a sign in name) in 98SE.

I did the installation of Windows 98SE and also XP myself but I did get help over the internet.

I'm embarrassed that I can't even get started on this after such good instructions.

Hank,

Don't feel embarassed...

Can you access the files in your Ghost image?

You would need to go to C:\Windows\Profiles in your image if possible. If you didn't use a username then the folder will most likely be named 'user'.

If you can get to the files in your Ghost image, let me know and I can help you from that point...

LiVeWiRe,

Yes, I can access the files in my Ghost image but that file is not there. The Ghost image is named "E" drive now but that doesn't work either. When I start to type "C:\Windows\" I get a long list of files but only two that start with "P" and profile is not there.

It's the same problem on the CD as well. When I started using a PC I never did get my files from my Mac into the PC but thought I'd be able to get them from 98 to XP. I know, I should have done a better job of saving them. I did get my other files off the Ghost image so not as bad as the Mac to PC experience.

Thanks anyway.

escapee,

Try searching your Ghost files for 'user' and 'favorites' to see what results you get...

I haven't used Win98 in some time so I could be wrong about the location of the user information.

Nothing found searching on user or favorites. I can't find the Favorites folder in XP either. Do you find it in XP by going to Run in the start menu and typing in C:\windows\profile\and my user name?

In XP it is under:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username

Can you take a screenshot of the files you have on your Ghost image and either email it to me or post it?

Yes, I'll email it. Might take several shots to get it all. I'm not real fast so if you get tired tonight I'll be here tomorrow and tomorrow night too.

escapee,

It may be too large for Hotmail to accept. Maybe break it into a couple of files if possible or put it into a zip file?

Try this address if you need to (it may accept the larger file):
finatic[at]verizon.net

escapee Unfortuantely, you're correct in having should have asked before you wiped out your Windows 98SE. It's actually easy to do beforehand. But unfortuantely, you copied the wrong directory. You have have copied C:\Windows.

The Favoirtes folder is located under C:\Windows\Favorites

The Address Book: C:\Windows\Applicatons

You are going to have to get them from your Ghost, if it is possible.

Next time, the easiest way is to copy the contents of the Favorites folder from either My Computer or Windows Explorer.

The Outlook Express Address Book: Export >Other Address Book> Text (comma seperated values)> follow the instructions.

escapee,

What are the directories listed under 'Windows' on E?

-LW

If you want, you can send another screenshot...no problem.

escapee,

Got the screenshot..sorry, meant to say double-click on the 'Windows' folder in your Ghost image drive to open it.

You can send a screenshot of that or if you see a 'Favorites' folder there then let me know.

LW,

The only thing in the Windows folder is a temp. folder that is empty and a NDISLOG "folder" that is a text document and is also empty, 0 kb.

escapee,

With your 'Windows' folder open on your Ghost files, click on 'Tools' at the top of the screen and select 'Folder Options'.

A smaller, separate window will open and you should see several different tabs. Click on the 'View' tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is marked. If not, then go ahead and select this setting. Click OK to apply the settings and exit the smaller window.

Now, refresh the 'Windows' folder and see if any other files have 'appeared'.

LW, I did everything but refresh the windows folder and can't find a refresh button. No refresh button on the windows folder.

The show hidden folders was not checked when I went to view.

You can just hit the 'F5' key and it will refresh it for you....

Hopefully some other files will appear once you do that. Another option is to close and re-open the Windows folder on E.

It could be that there just are no other files in that folder...

Just to be sure, you're opening the 'Windows' folder and not the 'Windows Update Settings' folder I also see on drive E?

Since that looks to be the case, I'm sorry to say that it looks like there won't be anything for you to copy from. Not sure why all the files were not copied if you did a complete image of the old hard drive...?

I'd feel better about that last part if you'd send a screenshot of the Windows folder on drive E opened...

LiVeWiRe,

I thought and tried to do a complete image of the "E" drive. My documents, pics, Quicken files and music were on the image. Don't know why the addy book and favorites aren't there. At least we gave it a good try and I certainly do thank you.

The screen shot is on the way.
