xp buying tip

I was looking at xp pro full on the internet. And almost everywhere it was $300. But at this one place it was $80. Do you think it is illegal. What should I do.

The OEM version sells for about $100.

I'm assuming here that you got that quote from an obsure and relitively unknown site. I'd be leery.

It was probably the OEM version for $80, and the full version for $300. That is possibly legitimate. Post a couple of links of what you're talking about and let us have a look, and we'll let you know.

Looks like an OEM to me, but I don't mess with ebay.

OEM is to be sold with hardware such as a cpu, ram, hdd or even with a mouse and doesn't come with the fancy box or support.

With the OEM version you lose the ability to do an upgrade install, the only option is a full install. (You still have the repair option though). The logic here is that an OEM copy is to be sold with a new computer and with a new computer there is no upgrade from capability needed.

You also lsoe the fancy box that comes with the retail version, the MS support (3 phone calls), and a booklet.

So which do you think i should buy? I rather spend $80 than $300. but If something screws up I want to get help and know how to install the operating system.

Look around, you can probably come up with a full version for somewhere between those two prices. Check these out.

Get an OEM version. It's a FULL version. If you found this board you don't need the three calls to Microsoft. Just get it from a reputable source.

Buy from a reputable reseller, not on eBay. There will be less risk buying from any reputable store, online or otherwise. OEM version will be fine, as previuosly stated, it is the same thing except without the fancy packaging. If you'd like, get XP Home and save some $$ there.
