drive letter assignment
I installed XP Pro on a P4P800 Asus Mobo with 2 drives maxtor 120 GB hooked up as Master/slave on IDE 0, and the DVD on IDE 1
The Install went without problems, but in my Explorer the devices show as - C: slave disk, no soft, D: DVD; E: master Disk with Xp installed on it. Can I correct this and have the master disk with letter C: assigned to it? thanks noby

The only way to assign a new drive letter to the system partition is to do a reformat.
You need to pay attention during the setup, as Windows asks you where to install to, and you chose the location. The drive letter that is shown there is the drive letter that will show up in explorer. RJ

Rj, at installation time, all was normal and ok, the disc with XP is the master on the ide 0 cable. I just dunno why it shows up as E:

Hmm. So you selected C: as the location and now it shows up as E: ? That is strange.
Since I haven't encountered that the drive letter changes during the installation, I'd say you disconnect the slave drive, install XP on the master, and after the installation connect the slave drive again. That way your master will be C:, and it doesn't change after the installation, after installing the slave hard drive. RJ |

Rj, you don't understand it. I'll clarify. I unhooked the slave, booted from the master (with XP on it) and it still shows as drive E:. I must say I never saw such a thing. If I don't get something to correct this, I will be obliged to do the whole install over again

Well, I know that. The system drive letter never changes, no matter if you disconnect the other drive. And there is no way to change the letter coz it must not change, otherwise XP won't work.
The only way is to disconnect the slave, format the master, and install WinXP again. Since it is the only drive it should be C: You can see this in Windows XP Setup. If it is not C:, then remove the partition and create a new one, it will be C: then. Install WinXP then, and after you installed it you can connect the slave again, as the system partition never changes its letter. RJ |

Yeah, I suppose I 'll have to do it over again, but what bothers me is that I don't know where it went wrong. Or could it be this : come to think of it... :
when partitioning, I saw the 2 drives and paartitioned the slave before the master. Could this be the error? I mean I only partitioned the slave, went back to the master, partitioned it also, and started the install. I guess it's the only thing that could do it |
