xp pro 'found new hardware'

Hi, im having a problem with my xp pro where when i connect peripherals into USB ports, xp does not recognise it until i boot up the computer with the periphiral plugged in. It does not happen with my mouse but happens with everything else i have tried.

When xp does not recognise it and i unplug the device, i still get the notification sound to say that some hardware has been unplugged. Does anyone know how i can fix this. Thanks

A total guess here but if you have a BIOS option to assign an IRQ to the USB port then make sure it is enabled. Good Luck!

usb ports do not use a irq, only the usb controler
