Weird Problem:
I have a problem where upon startup of windows, windows seems to "forget" my previous power options settings and my monitor will remain on forever unless I open up power options then click OK, thus "reminding" windows that I want the monitor to shut off after X minutes

KlumpDud,
Here is a registry hack if you want to try it: Log onto the machine with an account with administrator privileges. NOTE: EDITING THE REGISTRY IS RISKY. Proceed at your own risk. Backing up a key before modifying it is recommended. First make sure to do the following: -Open Windows Explorer -Click Tools Folder Options -CLick the View Tab -Select Show Hidden Files and Folders -Remove check beside "Hide Extensions for know file types" -Click Apply -Click Apply to All folders To import the NTUSER.DAT hive file for the user you are having problems with: START | RUN | REGEDIT Navigate to: HKEY_USERS Click on the Key so that it is highlighted FILE | LOAD HIVE Navigate to: %SystemRoot%\Documents and Settings\[username] Locate NTUSER.DAT and double click Provide a name like [USERNAME] Navigate to: HKEY_USERS\USERNAME\Control Panel You should see a value: CurrentPowerPolicy You can set that based on the keys HKEY_USERS\USERNAME\COntrol Panel\Power Policies 0 through 5 Change the data for CurrentPowerPolicy to one of the 6 different policies. Navigate to: HKEY_USERS\USERNAME CLick on the key so that it is highlighted FILE |UNLOAD HIVE YOU MUST UNLOAD THE HIVE Hope that helps, -LW Last edited by LiVeWiRe; 03-08-2004 at 12:25 AM. |

livewire,
you say to go to file load hive, but in the registry editor there is no file menu, and thus no "load hive" option |

Use 'regedt32' instead of 'regedit' to open the registry editor. Sorry about that... -LW Last edited by LiVeWiRe; 03-08-2004 at 12:26 AM. |

I type in the name, hit enter, and get the error:
Registry Editor could not accomplish the requested operation. |

KlumpDud,
Sorry...been out-of-town and just got back. Have you tried another admin account as andyms18a suggested? Also, where exactly in the steps I outlined is the error happening? -LW |

Registry Editor could not accomplish the requested operation. Also, (this is weird) when I try logging on to windows with any account other than my usual one, it goes to a blue desktop w/ nothing on it and doesn't do anything. I then half to ctr+alt+del to log off and then back on as my usual name. |

Why do I need this? I can see what starts up by looking in the registry under run, or I can use msconfig.exe

Yup - your registry is damaged. Your software is all going to have to be reinstalled over the top of itself.

Review your power options in bios carefully - ACPI and APM need to be enabled, but disable all standby and wake events. This should give control totally to Windows.
