start up and shut down

Two problems:
on start up I get: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Programs launching every time and on shut down I get the warning box that explorer.exe is not responding and I have to wait until it does.
Any tips on how I can rectify this?
It may or may not be important but I have nothing in the all users start up folder, everything is in my own user id start up folder (i did that manually as i prefer it all in one place).

Hello Craigtaylor,

Run a spyware check with a program called Adaware and top it off with Spybot. You can find both these programs at www.downloads.com .

Check if you have any viruses, with Http://www.trendmicro.com free online virus scanner.

done that and no difference. the explorer.exe box on shut down is sporadic but the startup folder is every time.
