Windows XP Home vs Windows 2000 Pro

Which would you use and why? I am trying to decide which system to install on a home computer. The reason that I put 2000 pro in here is because I can get that for around the same price as the Windows 2000 home.
Not trying to start a battle here, I just need to know the pros and cons of the systems in order to make an informed choice. Computer is used for general home use, nothing fancy. The computer will be networked to another computer already running W2K pro, if that makes a difference.

I use 2000 pro exclusiviely at the office. I have one computer at home using XP home and another using 2000 pro but that computer only does office type work. I prefer the XP home for home applications. I'd buy XP home. Most of the problems associated with XP a few months ago seem to have been corrected. Anyway it is cheaper.

that would be pretty much a preferance thing, they are both good os's and hp home would be more likely to have all the latest drivers you would need fore a home system, it also has a lot of good features that w2k does not have.

WHen MS created XP one of their goals was to take the more stable NT kernnel and incorporate it in an OS that would be able to run not only business applications, but also games, media, and other software that was common to home computer use. When 2000 was created, it was from the start targeted at businesses for day to day office applications.
Get XP!

Theres a windows 2000 home edition?

Windows 2000 is a very good OS, but XP has a newer kernel.

Personally, I hate the XP GUI and some of the other junk added into XP and thus plan to keep 2K for a while.

XP GUI > just send it back to the Classic View including the desktop.

Windows 2000 Personal Edition was planned but has never been released.

As to Win2K vs XP, they're both similar. Windows 2000 was the first NT based OS to support the lastest games, not XP. XP just got a new GUI and some new features, that's it.
DirectX for Win2K and XP is the same, so there is no difference for the games which OS you use. All my DirectX games work in Win2K as well as XP.

But I'd also get XP coz the Home edition is cheaper than Win2K pro, and has features that you might want. For example the broadband support, the network via firewire.
Even XP Pro vs. 2K Pro, I'd choose XP because it is as expensive as 2K, but newer and also very reliable.

If it was XP Profesional I'd say get it, but 2000 Pro is alot more secure and stable then XP Home. XP Home is alright for games but it uses the same File Allocation Table as Windows ME/98 (FAT32).

I've been using 2000 Pro on one of my computers for 3 years and has ran flawlessly ever since.

XP Home uses NTFS, too. It is up to you if you want FAT32 or NTFS.

Totally wrong.. XP Home is based on the NT Kernel and can use NTFS as well... it's every bit as stable.

Go with XP.

Win3.1?! Who uses that anymore?

Win95B was pretty good.

WinXP Home beats 'em both .

I use both os at home and work; both work well and have been kept up to date via service packs. My personal preference is for win2k pro simply because I do not like the cute, cartoon look of xp. Even in classic view it is too cute looking for me. XP does have the system restore feature. System restore is useful for people that do not use imaging software.
