Trial Version of XP
Hi all,
I've been trying to help my cousin with their new computer. I'm still getting some info from her, but anyway here is my initial question. Has anyone ever heard of a trial version of Windows XP. My cousin just bought a new pre-built pc. It was supposed to come complete with software. She claims when she arrived home that her windows xp disc had trial version written on it. Once she booted up she was given the option to purchase the full version for $500. I had never heard of such a thing and I think she is loosing it. Has anyone else ever heard of something like this. |

My hunch is that it was a trial version of Microsoft Office XP--not Windows. Microsoft has in the past actually sold 30 day trial versions of Office XP for $9.95. Now you can order a"free" trial version CD and they'll charge you $7.95 for shipping.

The only "trial" version of the XP OS was the RC1 which you could use for 6 months. But that version no longer worked after January 2003.

The office xp thing is what I was thinking. I hope to get a look at her system soon and solve the mystery. I was just hoping windows hadn't gone off the deepend.

I'm using an XP 120day eval copy I got with my Tech Net subscription. Also running SP2 beta that came with the same subscription.
So it looks like your cousin might have been taken to the cleaners. |

No, the price is all wrong for Windows XP. Has anyone ever heard of Windows XP selling for $500? I doubt it. On the other hand, that price is perfectly in line with Office XP.

If the pc has Office installed, open any one of the office apps and go to Help->About
Look on the very first line and see if you see the word TRIAL in the version number. |
