Setup error - locks up on startup disk
After hundreds of 98 in place re installs, I've finally encountered a snag. This particular computer freezes when it gets to the creating startup disk part. I've tried using the switch to shut it off, but nothing works. I boot with a CD, install from the DOS prompt 'setup /pf /ie', and all is well. Then, when it gets to the point where it wants to make a startup disk, it says it can't read the disk, I hit cancel, and instant lock up. What gives?

Just to make sure, I'd try different floppies and/or another floppy drive. If this is a customer's computer, I'd double-check the cables too. And the Floppy settings in the Bios.
Doesn't sound like a bad CD or CD-drive, since it locks up only in that one spot. See if that does it. If that doesn't do it, do you have the Bios Anti-Virus turned off [if not, try turning it off & give things another go] . . . Gary [p.s. ...and just in case there's something in the grammar or procedure that might be off, here's a guide http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846] Last edited by GaryRouth; 03-05-2004 at 02:28 PM. |

You might try some different memory.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I changed the BIOS to boot with the floppy, and then it finally took. I don't know why it was spazzing out like that. I even changed the floppy drive, and it didnt help. Chalk this one up to 'things that don't make sense'.
