Slow Startup with Windows XP Pro

Hello, i was wondering if anyone else has this problem or knows how to fix it, or why it is doing this. When i first turn on my system and log on to Windows, i cant run anything until my networking connections pop up in the system tray. Why does this happen and can i fix it? Please help me. Its annoying cuz it takes like 3-5 mins. Thanks.

Chad

I've seen what you are describing if there are network connections active but not plugged in, or perhaps a wireless one but no wireless access point to connect to, because windows takes that much more time to try to connect but can't, so just a thought here but if you do indeed have any network connections present and enabled but don't use them, disable them or delete them

Ok thanks, ill try that. Its seems like it does it when the connection is active tho. Like if nothing is plugged into the NIC it seems to boot a bit faster and i dont have this problem. But when something is connected to it, it takes forever. The only thing that its connected to is my DSL modem.

well it doesn't sound like there is anything to try as far as what I suggested originally but now that you have given more details hopefully we can give you a better answer or probable cause to the problem. I can't think of anything of hand but would like to know, has it always been this way since you have had DSL and if not can you link anything to when it started like new software, hardware, or some other incident that may trac down the cause??

i havent added anything new, its always been like this. With my T-DSL in germany, and my Verizon DSL in the states. Even at my friends house on his cable. The thing works fine once i wait a few minutes for it to load, but my friends dont have this problem, so its a bit annoying

It sounds like your problem is likely the result of your network adapter's Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings. Right click on My Network Places, select Properties. Then right click on the network adapter you use for your DSL modem, and select Properties. Then click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button. Click on the General tab. My bet is that you'll see that its set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and to "Obtain a DNS server address server automatically". If your DSL provider gives you a dynamic (changing) IP address, then these do in fact need to be your settings, but it causes startup to be a bit slow. On the other hand, if your DSL provider gives you a static IP address, then you should have it set instead to "Use the following IP address" and then you'll need to find out what IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway to use. Likewise, you'll have to find out your Preferred and Alternate DNS servers. Who is your DSL provider?

When you have DHCP enabled, you will have a slower startup as the machine will be grabbing an IP address from the ISP servers. Common thing. Normal thing if your running Windows 2000.

Shepard...i use VerizonDSL which is dynamic :-(. And the other guy..srry i didnt catch ure handle...i disabled the DHCP??? and it still took forever to load, actually took longer than usual. The thing about this is that, i connect to the DSL PPPoE, it doesnt auto connect, i do it myself. So am i stuck with this slow load? Thank you for the help.

Shepherd - you are close. What you need to do (I know this *sounds* wrong but it works) is uncheck TCP/IP in your local area connection properties. It actually doesn't use it - it uses PPPoE. The ONLY thing that needs to be checked is "PPP over Ethernet Protocol". You do not need any other clients, protocols, or filesharing.

I wasn't even thinking of the possiblility of PPPoE. Thanks, glc. Come to think of it, I don't even see Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) appear in my list of local area connection properties. The last time I ever had to check it was in my router settings, when I used to subscribe to SBC Yahoo DSL. So, glc, where is it in local area connection properties?

One thing isn't clear, sk8ersublime: did you ever find PPPoE anywhere in local area connection properties? Or did you simply disable everything else there?

Shepherd: It's only in there when you have the modem directly connected to the NIC or USB, and you are using the XP PPPoE connection or 3rd party connection manager software (Winpoet, Enternet, RASPPPoE). With a router, PPPoE is handled in the router and the router is your DHCP server.
