Can't start Office application on Win98SE
I can't start MS Office 2000 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). When I start the application I got a message "Program has done irregular operation and will be closed", clicking on details show something like "Explorer caused error in memory paging in modul WINFGD.DLL on 0167:61c05319". So I ran an antivirus program which found 1 virus in c:\windows\applicationdata\iefeats\msiesh.dll - win32/trojandownloader.winshow.Q. So I deleted it and then ran antivirus again. No viruses found. But the Office applications don't start.
Then I tried other memory modules (DDRAM Apacer 512MB/333MHz and even SDRAM Apacer 64MB). Nothing has changed. So I put the original memory modul DDRAM Apacer 256MB/266MHz back and tried MEMTEST86+ v 1.11, but no errors in five tests were found. When I try to remove programs I got the same message ("Program has done irregular.....). When I try to reinstall programs from original CD I got the same message. Computer configuration is : PC : MB ECS P4S5A/DX+, chipset SIS645DX, AMI BIOS P4S5ADX+ release 04/02/2003, procesor P4 1,5GHz, HDD 40GB Maxtor, RAM Apacer 256MB/266MHz, OS Win98SE. It is two years old and Office 2000 is installed there all that time. The messages here are translated from slovak language and so maybe they would look like a little different in original english version. Can I do anything else than reinstall it on newly formatted drive? Thanks for help. jankohrasko |

Try this:
1) Run HouseCall - just to double-check your current AV scanner hasn't been compromised by virus activity. http://housecall.trendmicro.com 2) Run RegClean 4.1 - to clean up the Registry (this MS program was updated to work well with Win98. Details on how to use it are in the Readme.txt file) http://download.com.com/3000-2094-88...ml?tag=lst-0-1 3) Test your Office 2000 apps. If they are OK, great. If not: try Start/Programs/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs = see if the Office items will repair or not. If the answer is no, then go to step 4. 4) Try an over-the-top reinstall of Windows http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846 Even in the worst case, all this shouldn't take more that a few hours. Best of luck . . . Gary |

Hi Gary,
Well, I did everything according to your list of tasks and everythigh went OK, but my Office applications simply don't want to run. 1. I have run House Call AV scanner - it has found 3 infected files, then deleted them. But Office don't start. 2. I have downloaded RegClean 4.1, let it do its job. Office don't work and don't let me uninstall it form computer. 3. So I tried to make that over-the-top reinstall of Windows 98SE yesterday. Everything went exactly how you described with one small difference : I didn't have to type CD-key in, I wasn't asked to do so. So everything went OK, all icons are there, all programs are there, screen resolution was set to its original. But office applications simply don't work, displaying the same message all the time. Next I will try another MB. Lets see what happens. To be continued.... jankohrasko |

I don't really suspect the motherboard, if all your other programs run OK. If the problem only centers on Microsoft Office 2000, that's probably where the repair will be.
What error do you see when you try to uninstall? I have MS Office 2000 at work and here at home on my wife's computer, but I've never had the opportunity to repair it - so I'm not much familiar with it's peculiarities. If I remember a little bit, though, I think to uninstall, repair, or reinstall most recent Office editions you need to have the original installation CD handy [you usually see a prompt asking for the CD] There are some known issues with Office 2000 Registration, which can cause the programs not to start: see http://support.microsoft.com/default...oduct=Off2kset - - another issue: http://support.microsoft.com/default...oduct=Off2kset - - http://support.microsoft.com/default...oduct=Off2kset - - If Add/Remove won't allow you to uninstall Office 2000, see if it will let you use the "Reinstall Office 2000" option. If none if this helps, see if downloading and installing the last Service Pack for Office 2000 helps (I think is was Service Pack 3). Sometimes that can replace enough files to repair what was wrong. Here's a link to download Office 2000 Service Pack 3 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en See if any of this works . . . Gary |
