Problem with Windows Update 811493
This problem is on a Windows 2K machine. I have Windows Update set to automatically check for new updates and notify me when they are available. Every day it says that 811493 is available, so I install it. The next day, it says it needs to be installed again.
I have done what the M$ KB article says to do to check if it has really been installed by checking file versions and registry entries; everything checks out. But for some reason, it still thinks it needs to install update 811493 constantly. I have also tried installing it with Norton AV disabled; no change. I went to uninstall it, but Windows says that uninstalling that critical update would break about two dozen things, so I am loathe to do that. Last time I uninstalled a critical update that would supposedly break things, lots of things did actually break, and I had to do a system restore. So, any thoughts on this? |

I had the same problem on a Win XP Pro machine. All I did was reject the update when prompted. Then, after a few days I downloaded the update manually from the Windows Update site. It installed fine and never prompted to be installed again.

I have tried going to the Windows Update site to manually download it, but when I try to access the site, I get an error about my computer clock being incorrect (it is not), and so I am unable to access it.

I finally got the Windows Update site to work (SSL was turned off in IE, and M$'s helpful error message about the time being wrong didn't shed a whole lot of light on the true problem), and I think it is resolved. Thanks.

Wasn't 811493 the update that was released twice because the first version had a bug that drastically slowed down everyone's machine? Seems like that was last spring. If the problem persists, doc, try going into the "personalize windows update" on the update site and unselect that particular update (assuming it appears needed after a system scan) and save the settings.
