super quick question
I have a dual-boot setup using two hdds. One hdd has WinXP Pro, and the other has WinXP Home edition. I know it's a dumb setup, but it's been like this for a couple years now and somewhere along the way, I forgot which hdd has Pro and which has Home. Well I need to take out the hdd that has Home edition on it but I don't want to lose data on the Pro hdd.
So the question is: how do I find out which drive has which operation system on it?

Click start\run, type winver. It will display the version of Windows you are running.

hmm - I know I am in WinXP Pro, because that is what I choose from the boot menu. What I need to know is if Pro is on the C or the D drive - how can I figure that out?
Pro is on one drive, and Home edition is on the other. I don't know which drive has which OS on it. |

Ok, since you have the systems on separate physical drives, go to control panel\system\start up and recovery. On the top where it says "system start up" click on the edit tab that says "to edit the start up tab manually click edit"
This will open your boot.ini file. Your C: drive will be disk (0) the D: drive will be disk (1). Similar to this, multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Widows="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect This indicates that this system has XP Pro installed on the C: drive, disk(0) on partition 1 |

ok my boot file has this:
[boot loader] timeout=25 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect so, just to be sure I am understanding you guys correctly - the C: drive has Home Edition and the D: drive has XP Professional? |

You may have problems removing the Home drive, because it contains the boot sector, and Pro thinks it's on D. You will have to boot with the Pro CD and do a repair, and this may turn the drive into C, and none of your programs will work.
