Hi all. Recently I had to format my harddrive and I've had to reinstall everything I had on before.
Now i'm having some problems with some USB devices. My digital camera, web cam and printer all work fine. But when I plug my other digi cam or my mp3 player in the screen freezes. Not the whole screen though. To access the files on these devices I have to go to F:\ in My COmputer. It brings the window up ok but after a couple of seconds the window just freezes and I have to disconnect the camera/mp3 before I can do anything again. I don't know why this would be as they both worked fine before. Both are Plug n Play so should be ok! Any ideas why this might be happening? Thanks! |

If these devices need updated drivers installed on the PC, have you done that?

I would first check to make sure that there is no Warning label in Device Manager or no IRQ conflicts and that the device is working proper. I would also check the net for any updated drivers for these devices and install. www.driverguide.com is a good place to start. It sounds like it might be a driver issue.

Well about an hour ago there was a conflict with my "USB Controller". Basically said that there were no drivers installed. I installed some drivers from that site you mentioned and that solved the problem.
There is still one problem with my "nVidia WDM Video Capture". I tried installing the latest drivers from the nVidia site but it made no difference. Could that be what is affecting me? |

Does your video adapter reflect the nVida?
Go to Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Adapter (tab) and make sure that the correct nVida adapter is being referenced. If not, then click on Properties>Driver (tab)>Update Driver and re-install the driver there. Let us know what happens! |

OK. I've tried installing drivers here there and everywhere and STILL it keeps freezing. I've got everything in the device manager working fine now.
This is really annoying as I have stuff on the camera that I need pretty soon. As soon as I disconnect the device everything responds again. Has anyone any other ideas? Getting desperate here. |

lets see if this work, when your pc at off state hook everything to your system then turn it on. go to CMOS and reset the data configuration...so that your BIOS reconfigure the IRQs for your devices so they don't have resource conflict...

If your camera uses a removable memory card, just get a card reader and use that instead of hooking the whole camera up to USB. This doesn't address the issue, but it's a workaround if you have to get the pics off.

Well I would but I don't use that camera much as it's my flatmate's. I would like to solve this problem cos I do use my mp3 a lot for transferring files to and from university.
It's really strange that my camera, printer and webcam all work fine but those 2 others dont. |

If you are comfortable with the Registry then I would advise you to attempt this but if you are NOT advance with the Registry then STAY AWAY because you can destroy your entire system.
Most of the time when a program is uninstalled there are still lingering files left on your system. I would first uninstall any program associated with your problem and remove all drivers associated. Next I would go into the registry (START>RUN...type regedit....OK). Highlight My Computer. Click on Edit (at the top) and select find...type in a keyword (e.g. name of the camera or program). Click Find. Delete the folder or value, but BE AWARE of what you are deleting...make sure it's associated with the program...if you are unsure then don't delete. Click F3 (find next)...to go to the next folder or value and delete again. Continue this until you reach the end of the registry. You might be there for a while doing this but this has worked for me in the past. Once finish with the registry...reboot your machine and re-install your program and drivers. The purpose is you might have a corrupted file from the previous install that is still hanging on and each time you re-install that sticky file doesn't overwrite properly...this way you will do a fresh-clean install. Just be sure before you open the registry you uninstall the program and remove the driver properly and reboot the machine if needed. Let us know what happens! Good luck! Ok chaps, new twist in the tale...
I just tried what ThePoor said about resetting the data configuration and I thought he'd got it! For a minute... Everything worked fine when I booted it up, managed to download some songs off my mp3 player. Then I disconnected it and reconnected and windows froze on me again. So I CAN access files if I plug the device in before booting up. I could put up with this but I still would rather get it sorted. I'm still a little weary to mess with the registry. So, after this new info does anyone have any new ideas? Thanks again to all who have replied! |

Hmmm, maybe that's my problem then. I downloaded SP1 on the day I formatted my drive. Dunno if I can just delete it again. Some research is in order I think!

Does anyone know how I can get rid of SP1? I STILL haven't got the USB problem solved!!
I tried using it on my friend's laptop and it just recognised the mp3 as an external drive (which it used to on mine!), why isn't it working?!?! aarrgghh!! I plug it in, it says new hardware found and then says it cant find the right drivers. It doesn't need drivers!! And why does it only work if I plug it in BEFORE starting up the PC? Thanks! |

Well I had an idea. My PC came with a windows recovery disk. It has an option to repair windows, do you think this would fix it? Or would this also change all my settings etc..? Thanks
