Installing XP useing recovery disk
My new laptop came a couple weeks ago and the 30 gb hdd was already half full of all the crap dell installed, most of which I don't use. I want to reinstall XP, but its on the recovery disk. I have'nt boughten a retail computer since 98 and they didn't have the OS on the recovery disk. So how does it work. Do I just put in the disk and reboot, and just install like any other windows XP instalation or is there something els I need to do first?

Yes, yes, yes. Just put the recovery CD in, restart, the system will be restored to the original settings...like the first days you bought it.

Many times you need to hold down a certain key (with my HP it was [F10]) to boot from the CD.
From there, you go through the options, and it will restore the system to the out-of-the-box settings. |

I don't believe so. That is the problem with the brand name PC's. All the extra crap that comes pre-installed.

Most of the extra crap comes on other blue disks, 7 of them. So I'm hopeing I don't have to install it. I wish they would let you choose to get rid of software you don't want when you buy it. I never even knew it came with MS encarta and money. I never plan to use either of them but they just won't uninstall. And then most of the other software aren't even full versions.

Me thinks you have a problem. When you run the restore disks, it will wipe your hard drive clean and install everything just like it was when Dell released it originally. Don't think you can do a repair/reinstall with a restore/recovery disk. Had the same problem with my daughter's Toshiba notebook. Saved all her personal stuff before the recovery, then had to rework everything back to my preferred settings. Pain in the back side!

Dell restore discs only install the OS, just don't put the other discs in unless they contain something you need or want.
