Win Update installs old AMD processor software

I update WindowsXP regularly, and occaisionally it offers driver updates.

Last month (Feb-16-04) it installed "Advanced Micro Devices processor software update released on August 29 2001". This is very old, and I've had windows running for 6 months+.

Anyway, today it installed "AMD processor software update released on December 17 2002".

Why didn't it install this last time, and what do these drivers do anyway? Are they special AMD utilities, Windows code optimizations, or something else entirely?

Windows code optimizations
Well without going into a whole history lesson and giving examples, you can just quite simply say that they are optimizations.

I recommend you refrain from downloading driver updates from the MS update site. Go to the device manufacturer to look for updates. Just as XP doesn't provide the best drivers for a device, neither does the update site.
