Install oem xp on 2 computers because i wann wait for 64....

Im buildign a 64 bit system, well the amd 64 3400 and so on, i have a regular 32 bit system right now, but im givin it to a friend, teh problem is that i hear that a new 64 bit windows xp will come out, and i will have to buy a whole new os since it wont be able to upgrade to 64 .... I have heard this from a website about the new os, anyway, i was wondering if i cna install the oem version of windows on my new rig untill i can get the 64 bit version....Is there a loop hole? What about the demo of 64 bit windows, can i just run it in 32 bit mode for a free year?

Not legally. The OEM copy of XP is tied to the machine on which it was installed, so you cannot legally install it on another one, even if you remove it from the other PC.

bigandy how is the OEM disk tied to the machine? just wondering, cause i have been wondering if i could use the XP disk that came with my dell on a new machine i plan to build in the future. It seems unlikely the disk it tied to a specific machine as each disk would be custom and cost mucho $$. So i'm geussing there is something about the dell systems that allow the XP installation?

It's because the EULA for the OEM version of XP, states that it can only be installed on one machine.

The Dell OEM Windows XP CD's are keyed to a Dell bios - if it doesn't see it, it won't install.

To repeat, OEM XP is licensed to be used only on the computer it was delivered with, any other use is a violation of the EULA even if it is physically possible to install. Transfer of license is not permitted.

As bigandy said the xp cd disk is tied to one machine,But just what is it tied to?The case ?Motherboard?Hard drive?Monitor?I was planning to upgrade a machine and reinstall xp.I though as long as you only have it installed on one machine your ok.I never read the EULA carefully.Guess I should.

You can upgrade the machine and still use the same copy of XP. If you make any "Major" changes you will have to call MS and they will get you going again.

Roger that. I changed the mobo, HD, NIC and video card in my PC. Had to call MS to reactivate, but it was painless.

I'd probably say it's assigned to the case - because M$ says to affix the COA sticker to the case.

What do you do if you want to change the case? The case isn't going to wear out but new designs are coming along.I just upgraded one for a friend and the case didn't even have a grill and screw holes for a rear fan.It was originally a Pentium 2 but I put a P4 in it.He wanted to hold down costs but I would have tossed it.I put a slot fan in it.The newest designs have a 120mm fan in the rear and better cooling.

most sustems that have the key fixted to the case are properity systems and you cannot use a standard new atx case anyway, and then you will have to eather buy a new os call microsoft and explaine what your doing to them so they can fix it for you,

You could swap cases and keep everything else the same and it wouldn't require activation. I swapped all the critical stuff and was required to call and get new key, but I think more than anything it is to keep from having 2 copies with same code accessing net and downloading updates.

I may be illegal, but I have never affixed the sticker to any case for the builds I've done.

With the wording of the COA it is illegal.

You can swap all the contents of the inside of the case but not the case. The OEM is non-transferable the retail is transferable.
