How can I reinstall Windows XP without formating, or needing any partitions and keep my data?
With Windows 98SE, I could delete the Win.com, and rename Windows to Win.old, and the Program Files to Prog.old and it would perform a clean installation. How can I do with with Windows XP? Thanks to anyone in advance who can help. Kind regards, Kevin...* |

From my understanding, you can just reinstall XP from the CD and it will keep all of your settings and documents intact.

DragonNOA1,
It's my understanding if you do a normal install of XP it will format the disk that installation is made to. Wouldn't that cause all the information on the disk to be lost? Can you install XP without formatting the disk? |

I thought so. When it tells you to format, just say no or skip.
I just put in the XP CD and it has an upgrade option (which really is a downgrade) but it says it'll install and keep your data and settings. |

I think you are right. It is possible to upgrade. I was thinking of a clean install.

When you insert the XP CD, it should offer the option to do a clean install or an upgrade. If you choose upgrade, it will preserve all of your files and reinstall XP. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

I'm am trying to reinstall Windows without keeping any of the old 'crud' from the old Windows. Things like shared dlls, common files, device inf files, vxd files etc. ett. etc.
Essentially, what I am after is... is there a way (albeit using the Recovery Console) that allows you to rename the Windows, Program Files, and Documents and Settings Folders to something else? Most of the time, the hard disk is formatted with NTFS (which makes the Windows 98SE boot disk useless). Thanks. |

personally, to simplify things I would back up all of my data to a CD and do a clean install. You will have less trouble in the long run.
