Windows Update

Hey everyone, I just built my PC and installed XP on it. However whenever I try to go to the XP activation thing I get a message saying a connection could not be established and asks to make sure I have a connection available. I also cannot connect to Windows Update....I guess because of this. Also to note, NAV wont connect to download its updates. Internet Explorer and AOL Instant Messenger do work so I do have an internet connection. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated

Have you set the system date on it yet? Many sites like MS update look for a current date.

Well I was refering to the bios but that should cover it. Are you using Norton Internet Security? It's been known to cause these same problems.

XP's firewall might be enabled. In control panel, select "Network connections".
right click on whatever internet connection you use, then select "properties" then "advanced" tab.
If it's checked, uncheck it.

course, if you run a third party firewal like Zone Alarm, you may want to stop\disable it also.

not much

good luck

Do you have the correct time zone. I had a similar problem and it was a result of wrong time due to incorrect time zone setting.

If you are trying to get to Windows Update from the icon in the programs menu, here's an alternate path. Open Internet Explorer. Click on the tools tab, then click on Windows Update from there. Almost sounds like your Internet Connection is not established. If you have trouble connecting with IE, solve that problem first.

i agree with panama(sounds like an internet connection problem)and i don't think you can get updates until the xp is activated(at least i couldn't)are you able to get on the internet at all?if you can then then try activating via phone to ms that should solve the problem with the updates.

I do have connectivity......can go to sites, AIM, ect. I have also tried alternate paths to the update via IE. I have even messed with the security settings.

I did just notice something. I have Roadrunner High Speed Service (Cable)....has a downloadedable "Roadrunner Medic" and it gives me a webserver error......but says everything else such as e-mail and junk are ok. So I decided to try and use the Roadrunner installation Cd that they gave me when I first got roadrunner a year ago (keeping in mind that I have never used it on any of my other computers and roadrunner ran fine). However, when I stick in the RR disk a microsoft error pops up saying something about "VGTruckDbg" and gives the "send report or do not send". I really have no idea what VGTruckDbg is.

lol I get the whole computer built and then get hung up on something like this

btw, thanks for everyone helping me so far

Is SSL enabled in IE Advanced Options? This solved my problem I was having connecting to Windows Update.
