Need to install 98se on Laptop which already has XP?

I have a latop with XP pro installed on C:

I need to install 98se on the same computer (in order to use some old programs which don't run under XP).

What's the easiest way to do this?....can i just install 98se using a start disk then running setup in DOS?

Or will this ruin my XP install.

Many thanks in advance.

well you are gonna have to wipe the drive thats for sure. You should be able to dual boot though. Make sure you format with FAT 32 though because 98 doesn't suppourt NTFS and xp doesn't suppourt FAT 32. Use FDISK to format to FAT 32, and make 2 or more partitions. Install XP on the first then 98 on the second. I'm not sure what you will have to do to the boot.ini file but i think what you are trying to do is extremely possible.

Come to think of it you only have to format the XP partition as FAT32 if you wish to share files between the two operating systems. If you want the two to be seperate you could probably use NTFS for XP. not 100% though as i have never done this. I saw a tutorial on how to do this with windows 2000 i'll see if i i can find something like that.

Here is an article that covers a lot about dual booting windows i found it a little confusing however. hope it helps. http://www.webtechgeek.com/center-Fr...-Dual-Boot.htm
For More information try google. You definently wanna know what you are adoing before you dive into this.

Jazzius,

Have you tried running the programs in compatibility mode with XP?

the biggest problem that I can see with this is you will not have the drivers for the hardware that is in the laptop under w98.

To run compatability mode. Find the .exe file for the program in question (after you've installed it on your hard drive). Right click the .exe file and select properties. You will see a tab for compatability. Select the prior system you want to run. Done deal.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, what i was trying to say was that XP CAN use FAT32 if you wish it to. I never meant to imply that XP had to use NTFS if i did oops.
