directX problem

I try to install direct X on a newly installed win98SE system.
Everytime it unpacks the file, starts the setup and reboots. I tried direct X 8.0, 8.1 and 9 all with the same result.
Somebody has ideas out there?

Have you downloaded DirectX for Windows 98/ME ? The DirectX for Windows 2K/XP is a different one.

that's strange, RJ, MS states that direct X applies to all OS (exept W95)

or do you have other info?

Is it only rebooting during the Direct X installations, or has it done this at other times, too?

Is the processor near or above the 2ghz range? [there's a patch for Win98se for that]

If the reboots happen only under load, that could point to a power supply problem [basically, not enough clean power flowing consistently] - and of course heat can always be a problem. [with the power supply: if your motherboard has a 4-pin auxilliary power plug on it, that needs to be connected to the 4-pin connector from your power supply, or something may well end up underpowered]

As far as Direct X versions, if you grab one from Windows Update, it should be compatible with that computer. Disable any download managers if you use them when you visit Windows Update = they can cause the files to become corrupted (same is true for downloading any drivers, nVidia especially frowns on the download managers for downloads of their video drivers).

See if any of this helps or not

I checked the DirectX site again and was reminded that there is the websetup. Supported OS is Win98/ME/2K/XP so the web installer apparently detects the type of OS you have.
Sorry, but since I never use the web installed I didn't know about that.
