Reinstall ruined dual boot

I dual boot Win98 and WinXp on one HD and it worked fine until I did something really stupid.
Win98 had a lot of junk in it so I reformatted and reinstalled,
thinking I could fix the dual boot with Recovery Console.
When I started the install routine from Win98 ( CD wouldn't boot ) there was NO repair option. And when I got to the Console "Bootcfg/scan" reported only one Windows installation.
That's strange coz I can see Win XP on my D: drive when I get into Win 98.
What can I do?
I'm trying not to reinstall coz I don't want to lose my settings and upgrades.

did you change the boot sequence to cdrom in the BIOS??
if you didnt do that it won't be able to boot from CD..

after you done that->pop winXP cd into cd-drive reboot and when it ask press any key to boot from cd, make sure you press anykey... then follow direction...

Send a message via Yahoo to pillainp
The reason the XP setup cannot see the other install of Windows XP is probably because when you formatted the partition (C that contained Windows 98 and reinstalled it, you wiped the Master Boot Record for that drive, which contained the boot data for both installations of Windows (XP and 98).

Simply set your system to boot off CD, insert the XP CD and boot up. Opt to repair an existing installation of Windows XP, and go to the Recovery console. Once there, let the installer repair the XP install and it will rewrite the boot record so that you can boot to either OS once more.

I did what you suggested but something very strange happened: There was NO repair option on the first screen.
Did you mean the Recovery Console?
Well, when I got to it, the only commands that looked relevant were Fixboot, Fixmbr and Bootcfg.
I tried Fixmbr and got the message it's fixed.
Then I tried Fixboot and it asked if I wanted to fix C:, so I said OK coz that's where the mbr should be, right? I got the message that it was fixed, so I exited and rebooted.
Well, there WAS a boot menu, only problem was it's a choice between Win98 and WinXP SETUP!!! WHen I chose that, it went straight back to installing XP.
So what do I do now??

Boot into 98 and find the boot.ini file in the root directory (C: drive) and open it up.
Under operating system in the boot.ini on a new line put the whole phrase:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Then save and restart. It should work if NTLDR and NTDetect are on the C: drive also with boot.ini. Good Luck!

P.S.: Actually I think if you run fixmbr again or maybe fixboot D: (not both though, one or the other) it might work also.

I did what you said and I'm sure it would have worked.
When I started the computer again, Win XP was back in the boot menu. Problem was I got a message saying some of the dlls were corrupted or missing.
I replaced all the ones named but I could not do anymore coz I got a second message that mentioned dlls but didn't say which ones.
In the end I started a fresh reinstall (not an upgrade since I didn't want to lose Win98). Half way into the install, I got a message saying Setup found a previous installation and would I like to repair THAT instead of doing a new install?
So of course I chose "repair" and everything went fine. I've got XP back with all the settings intact and even the updates.

Thanks so much to all of you who responded.
