How to install win2k over win XP
How to install win2k over winXP pro. My ex is trying to do that but she says that the installation tells her the XP is newer and stops the install. I never had to do this but it does sound strange.

You can't do a down grade to 2K from XP, she will have to format and do a clean install of 2K by booting to the 2K cd and 2K is just like XP in which she will have the option to delete the current partitions, create partitions, format and install.

So, win XP has to be wiped off the harddrive before she attempts to install win 2k. She can't just boot to the win 2k cd while xp is still there?
How can she format the drive. She was told that the only way to wipe XP off was to go into add/remove programs and remove from there. Last edited by Karnevil9; 03-18-2004 at 09:58 PM. |

If her bios supports booting to cdrom she should be able to boot to the 2K cd and install with the option to delete the partition/s XP is installed on and format the partitions/HDD at the same time then once 2K is installed XP is history.
In order to install 2K while XP is there is to have multiple partitions and install 2K on a seperate partition. |

The computer came with xp installed as Fat32 on 20 gigs of the hardrive and NTFS on 40 gigs. Lil Jimmie, maybe I am just tired right now, but the two paragraphs you wrote seem to be contradicting each other. Background info. This hardrive is the one that has the hijackware on it, that is discussed on another forum here, http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...hreadid=92718. My ex hasn't been able to get it cleaned off, so she wants to buy and install a new hardrive. She can't find the restore disk that came with the computer, but she has a win2k disk that is not being used. I told her that she dosen't need a new hardrive, just install win2k, but this hijackware is not allowing her to open any programs on the computer. She has to do it from a boot option, or figure out how to get the hijackware off. Last edited by Karnevil9; 03-19-2004 at 04:18 AM. |

If there is only one partition on the HDD then there should only be one OS, which is now XP. To install 2K there is basicly two ways to do this either boot to the 2K cd and delete the partition, format and install 2K or boot to the 2000 boot disks delete the partition, format and install 2K.
If there are 2 partitions you can have what is called a dual boot with XP and 2K but it is rather tricky to do with XP installed, but we are not dealing with this isssue. Sorry if I lost you. |

OK. Sorry. It was me. Once I re-read your post I could see I got cornfused
She doesn't have boot disks, just the CD. Some where she is running into trouble. I will be over there tomorrow since my daughter comes home for spring break. I will try to see what the problem is then. Just as long as I know it can be done.
