My PC hibernate is gone??????

I can't find the hibernate option anywhere, on my shutdown/restart option box (window) or on my control panel/power management tabs. How can I find it or reinstall it?????? on Windows ME?

For a quick fix, you can try the System Restore feature built into WinME. Details are in the Help & Support menus. Basically you just choose a "restore point" from before hibernate disappeared.

Look at your Power Management settings in your motherboard's Bios Setup screens, too - just to see if anything changed in there.

My system restore has been out of order a long time ago. It won't function at all? Also, I don't know how to get to the motherboard bios screen that you referred to. Please post a reply on how to do that or anything else.

Hi again, I was going to write a nice long reply with all the details, when I found this webpage that explains the troubleshooting steps better than I could: http://www.blueowltechnologies.com/pmMeTShooting.asp

You'll want to go down to the section "I can't put my computer in hibernation" and then to the subheadings:
1) Is the Hibernate tab missing from Power Options?
2) Is there an entry in the Susfail.txt file that explains the problem?
3) Does Windows detect power management support?

The item #3 is the one where you'd look in both Device Manager for the Power Management listed in your System devices section, and where you'd check to see if ACPI is disabled in your computer's Bios. [the Bios, by the way, is a program on your motherboard that helps get things started before Windows starts up] . . .
. . . To enter the Bios Setup screens, you press the key that is displayed in a banner on your monitor as the computer is powering on. Some computers power on so quickly [...and some monitors warm up so slowly...] that you might not see the message banner go by. It should read something like "Press F1 (or DEL, F10, etc.) to Enter Setup". If you don't see anything like that at startup, try pressing the "Pause" key on your keyboard a few seconds after you press the power button to startup. That should let you view the initial POST screens = the Bios enter key should be displayed somewhere onscreen [POST = Power On Self Test]. To continue booting, just press any key - the space bar will do the trick nicely. In this troubleshooting, you'll be looking at the Power Management menus in your bios.

[. . . P.S. - - -> you also have another quick fix you could try, if you haven't been adding/removing much hardware/software lately. Boot the machine with either a bootable floppy disk (you can download a WinMe one from http://www.bootdisk.com) or the bootable WinMe installation CD, and choose "start computer with cd-rom support" (which is DOS) and from the command prompt (>) type:

scanreg /restore

and pick a date from before the hibernate feature disappeared. This restores a backup copy of your Registry.]

I found my problem in MSCONFIG, I restored the hibernate option, which was disabled???????? I went to the hib.log txt. and it said that it failed twice so I guess it removed itself. Thanks alot for the help.
I have another question, my mouse moves real jerky at times, is there something I can check/do about it. Please reply

Your computer could not Suspend or Hibernate,
because a device vetoed the Suspend or Hibernate request.

For your mouse, go into: settings>mouse and play around with the settings until you get the movements you like. Also if your mouse is a roller ball type, the ball may be dirty or the mouse may be worn out.

Even though the option is back, it's possible that the error condition still exists, and after failing again twice, the option to hibernate will disappear again.

Should that happen, read through that list of possible causes for hibernation failure on that Hibernation Troubleshooter webpage. Did you change anything just before losing hibernation? New hardware? New programs? New drivers? (especially for sound) Any virus found/cleaned by your AntiVirus program?

For erratic mouse movement - try the Mouse applet in Control Panel and try slowing the speed settings down a bit - that's a good first step. If this is a plain, older, non-optical PS/2 mouse - try another one if you have one handy [plug it in while the computer is off]. Or try cleaning the rollers of your current mouse. If this is a wireless mouse, interference can cause problems, and weak batteries can be a problem. If this is a Logitech mouse, you can try uninstalling MouseWare, and from Safe Mode remove all mice from Device Manager, reboot, and just try the builtin mouse support in WinMe. Or try reinstalling a recent version of MouseWare for your mouse.

Lots of troubleshooting to do. If System Restore wasn't working properly, it's possible the drivers for your system are a little chaotic. Also be sure to run a full system virus scan, and a spyware scan = such programs can cause all sorts of unpredictable behavior, and it's nice to have that ruled out - - > so that your other troubleshooting isn't a waste of time. [Anitvirus/AntiSpyware = Always a good 1st step in troubleshooting]

Have you tried updating mouse drivers? If it is a logitech mouse try using ms drivers instead of logitech's. If it is a web-wheel type programmable mouse try reinstalling or uninstalling the program and see if that helps. This could be one of those drawn out trial and error things but I know what you are talking about/going through, sux.
