I have a problem with my dvd burner after installing service pack 1

Hey I'm new to the board so hello everybody. I have a dell xps computer and it came with a burner. I've used the burner on regular cd-r and it works fine I have no problems with burning. when I stick in a dvd + r it will not read the disk. It says disk is full with no space. Now the disks are brand new and my burner requires the +R media format. Now here is where the problem gets intersting. I upgraded my home edition to pro. Now keep in mind when I bought the computer from dell Service pack 1 is preinstalled. When I installed the pro edition my burner worked perfect it read all media formats. I was extreamly happy at this point. I started to download all of microsoft updates. so on and so on all programes and everything. I poped in a dvd to burn and Wham I got the same problem. So to make a long story short
I reinstalled the system again and started troubleshooting. After I instlled service pack 1 My dvd burner will not read a blank dvd. Then I started installing everthing but service pack 1 in groups of say 5-6 programes at a time many went in well and then still read my disk. But then I ran across a batch that caused it not to read any more. I kinda just gave up a couple of months ago. But now I have an itch to get this problem solved. I know it is not the burner I had a dell tech out to my home and he installed a brand new burner. He was also suprised. that it wouldn't read a blank dvd. That was before I went to pro. Now that I installed pro they wont help me in this matter untill I install the original opperating system. Which I couldn't at the time I was using it for school.

Is anybody out there who can help me with this problem.
Any kind of info would be great.

Thanks
DropaStone

I have a similar problem... Once I installed the service pack, it had a conflict with DVD Shrink and Decryptor. My computer will lock up when I insert a disk.... I am stumped too.

Hmm. Can't really tell how why this is happening but have you tried to slipstream SP1 ?

I had no such problems and I have my SP1 slipstreamed into WinXP.

We've had topics about slipstreaming before, for example this one:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...ght=slipstream

They include links to sites that explain how to slipstream with nice pictures. These sites helped me when I was doing slipstreaming after SP1 came out.

what advantage will this give you if you are are having conflictions with the service pack? Looks to me this is just a way to install both the OS and SP1 at the same time...

Yep. The SP1 will be integrated in Windows XP, so you don't install it afterwards.

The service pack didn't give any problems to me, nor to any of my friends. So it shouldn't give any problems to you either. Maybe something went wrong during the SP1 installation or whatever, but I do believe that it is better to install a complete WinXP SP1 instead of installing the SP1 afterwards. Just give it a try. If it doesn't work you at least tried it.

I'll try it out... just means I have to download it again on dial up. That is a pain!

I do, however, have a problem when I install DVD shrink and decryptor. I think that might be conflicting with the service pack.... All I know is when I unitstalled the two, my computer stopped locking up when I would insert a disk.
