Changed motherboard, now I've got a problem

Okay, I admit I'm not an expert builder, but I figured I could change out a faulty motherboard for a new one. My Aunt's computer (custom built by a local shop) is used almost 100% for web browsing and e-mail. But she's been having problems as of late and they appeared to be motherboard related (according to said shop). They offered a "re-haul" of her system - new CPU, motherboard and memory for $200. So she called me and asked me if I thought it was worth it. Not being sure, I called my business partner and asked him what he thought. Craig figured it was an older system (Celeron 400MHz w/64Meg of Ram) and he had a newer CPU/motherboard sitting in our office she could have (Athlon 1Gig/A7V133a combination). So I figured that was something I could do.

Everything went fine (I had to track down the manual for those little connectors), but the system powered up and seem okay. Well, except for a little issue of Windows not being able to install a PCI Simple Communicaiton Controller. I tried allowing the installer to search on-line, no good. I tried the Windows XP CD, no good...for a reason. I guess said controller allows for access to the CD-Rom drive - which I could not access.

I've checked the cable, it seems fine and works when I swap it out to the hard drive. I've checked in the BIOS, and it's set to locate the drive automatically - but it doesn't. I made sure there is power going to the CD-Rom drive and that the little master/slave 'thing' is set correctly (it is). I even tried the CD-Rom as the slave of the hard drive, and that didn't work. But that's all I can think of.

I'm sure this has something to do with her previous system being a Celeron and the new one being a Athlon. She's very happy with the speed increase and the stability, but my Aunt does like to listen to CD's while she browses. So she's not real happy right at the moment.

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA.

Dave.

Hey Dave,

The "PCI Simple Communication Controller" is ususally a pci modem. Is there a modem in this machine? Other than that, the cdrom drive itself may have just taken a dump. Do you have one out of another machine to try in this system?

The PCI controller is the modem.

The CD problem is probably an IDE controller issue. A repair reinstall of XP plus the Via drivers should take care of that.

Yeah, I finally tracked down the modem thing - doesn't really matter since she's got DSL. And the CD finally decided to work, so it must have been the connector wasn't as secure as I thought.

Thanks to everyone.

Dave.
