What is your home page set to, and could that possibly have something to do with it? Try setting to blank page to test that theory out.. Otherwise when did the trouble start, and what could have possibly coincided with that. You could go to internet options and set back to defaults if you think it could possibly be a setting problem, or make sure you are up to date on windows updates, in fact you may have lost all your updates when you did a reinstall of win98, and you may want to check for windows udates again..

Yes there is a repair of IE in Win98, and I believe it is found in controlPanel>AddRemovePrograms, and than I can not remember if it is right there or in add remeove windows components. I think it was right at the first window and it starts out like your gonna remove IE, but you click it and it tells you this can not be removed but would you like to do a repair and you click yes and that may do the trick..

IE 5 doen't have the repair tool in Add/Remove programs...try this and see if it helps:

From the Start menu, choose Run.

In the Open field, type rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt" Note: The command is case-sensitive.

then you should be able to select the repair option

After execution of the command mentioned in your last post, I get an internet Explorer5 and workset window with 1 option active : add ; when I click ok it says :
Cannot find the necessary files for windows update setup. Execute setup from the original location

So I'm still at square 1

you have more ideas of how getting this show on the road again, Gimpy?

thx

Have you tried going to control panel>internet options and setting back to defaults, and homepage to blank?? I think if U can at least get running you will be able to get to microsoft updates and upgrade that version to 6..Are you on dial up or broadband??

The original location in this case is your Windows CD.

If you have an alternative browser and broadband, you can get a FULL IE 5.01 SP2 install here (80mb):

http://browsers.evolt.org/download.p...2/ie501sp2.exe

Before doing this, you should probably do a virus and spyware scan.

I don't recommend IE6 on Win98 - it's a 50-50 chance it will work well, and if it doesn't, you will have a mess on your hands.

How about at least going to version 5.5?? Version 6 worked good for me with win98 on several PC's but I'm sure you are correct there that it may turn south and be a nightmare..

Thanks GLC, I'm doing the download, but what do you mean by : "The original location in this case is your Windows CD."
I ask this because I have the original Windows SE CD

thanks to all the people responding; I will post back with the result.

What glc is referring to is that the IE version on your computer, if you haven't updated it, is the version that was installed from your Windows installation CD along with the rest of the operating system. I think Win98se is IE version 5.0 The download link is a handy one, since all the Security Updates and patches up to Service Pack 2 are included in it. If your hard drive has room (especially if you don't have broadband) you can keep the folder created by the download on your hard drive - it makes repair installs nice & quick, since all the files it'll need will be right there.

Hope it does the trick

Well you're on top of the problem : I did not have that much room on the disk, and yes the link is very useful.
Alas, it did not resolve my problem, so there must have been something else with the soft. A strange thing is that the mail worked fine with Outlook Express, so i was certain it had nothing to do with the dialup modem and/or settings. I'm formatting the old beast and reinstalling everything....
Thanks to all for staying with me on this problem

Hi again

I'm up a bit late working on an old Compaq, so you get the deluxe tech service tonight:

If you were able to use an alternate browser from the computer with the IE errors, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and let HouseCall do an up-to-date virus scan on your full system. It's a nice quick scanner too (though if you're on dialup, it takes forever to move from 95% download to the ready to scan phase [that's while it's setting up} --takes less than a minute on broadband. I recommend the online scan, because sometimes your primary local antivirus program can be itself compromised by a virus.

Also try a spyware scan with AdAware &/or Search&Destroy. It's not so uncommon anymore that the unasked for tracker software from unscrupulous sites can run into conflicts. You can grab AdAware at http://www.lavasoft.de and Search&Destroy is over at http://spybot.safer-networking.de

Nice things about those two are: they get recommended a lot, and they are small downloads that get the job done.

See if they get your IE a bit happier.
. . . Gary

EDIT - - you know, if I was a little more awake, I'd have read the last line in your last post better: the one that mentions you're reformatting & reinstalling! I imagine that unless your backup data is infected, that should take care of your illegal operations. I do recommend scanning any backups or non-write protected disks that you use during your reinstall. I think there is a fair chance that you may have had a little visitor in your previous installation.

[ . . . Now I'm off to sleep -- so I won't be able to write as many nonsensical posts for a few hours . . . ]

IE 5.01 SP2 will run just fine on Win95 and Win98. It can't run on ME and XP because ME came with 5.5 and XP comes with 6.0, and you can never go backwards.

KT: I'd recommend 5.5 EXCEPT that it has known issues with printing from IE and OE. Of all the versions of IE out there since version 3, the one I have had the LEAST problems with has been 5.01.

My recommendations are as follows:

Win95: Alternative browser (Mozilla, Opera).
Win98: 5.01 SP2
WinME: The 5.5 it came with
Win2K/XP: Latest IE6
