Hey,
I'll get right to the point - is my Hewlett Packard Desktop ready to run WinXP Home FULL version in its current condition? These are its current specs: Hewlett Packard 10.2 GB HDD 5200 RPM 348 SDRAM Intel Celeron 500 Win98SE Operating System Will I need to do Upgrade instead or is upgrade necessary? I'm planning to do a hardware purchase at Newegg, in which case the OS becomes about 90 USD (bargain - celebrate! ).If more information is needed, please post. Any help here, I will be grateful for. Thank you all in advance ![]() Thanks, kram

Yes that current machine looks to be above the minimum requirements for winXP, but all you have to do is check the microsoft site under winxp and you'll see a link to min requirements and when you run the xp disk there is a wizard to check for any hardware or software incompatabilities with Winxp, and it will list them for U..

According to MS, your system meets the minimum requirments for XP. Personally, I'd save the money and apply it toward the system in your sig. Otherwise, you're going to have to buy another copy for the future system or remove it from the HP and reinstall 98se. A fully updated 98se system with all the unneccesary programs removed and start up programs limited in msconfig will run nicely on your current system. The $90 price is only a couple bucks savings over the everyday price at Newegg anyway. Your call either way.

A clean install will be much better than doing an upgrade. You are well over minimum requirements, but don't expect the same speed you get out of 98 and that 10 gig drive is gonna fill up real quick. Personal opinion - Win2K is a better bet but XP *will* run ok.

Thanks glc - I'll look at Win2000. I'm basically just concerned about its going out of its time, so as to making it up to date. Right now, it seems that Win98SE is doing well in current technology and stuff, but with the new release rumor of the new Windows OS codename "Longhorn", it seems that like Win95, Win98 will be the next to be near obselete

If 98 is doing the job, keep it for now. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd put 2K or XP on the new system though - when you get it built.
