Windows XP upgrade

Hi friends,

What is the difference between Windows XP upgrade CD and a Windows XP CD?

I think that both contain about 485 MB of data and both can be used for fresh installations of Windows XP.

One does not necessarily need to have Windows 98 / ME installed to use Win XP Upgrade CD. Win XP Upgrade CD can be used ona freshly formatted HDD too.

I think the only benefit of having Win XP upgrade CD is that it costs lesser than the full version. Both the full version and the upgrade version can be used on Win 98 / Me installations to upgrade to XP without loss to programs and data.

Hope my understanding is right. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks a lot
Regards
Gautam

I don't know if you can upgrade from Win9x to XP with the full version of XP (I think you can't), but what you said about the upgrade is right. It is basically a cheap full version, you can either upgrade or do a clean install, but if doing a clean install you'll have to insert the CD of the previous windows version when XP Setup asks you to prove that you can legally use it.

The full version can be used to do an upgrade if you insert the CD while in Windows, but not if you boot with it.

Had an exception to this recently, glc. My nephew in Iowa did a new build and had XP upgrade previously installed on his old system. He used the XP upgrade disk as a boot disk and when it asked for verification of an existing system, I had him insert his original copy of 98se. He was then instructed to remove the 98 disk, reinstalled the XP update CD and proceeded with the installation. Worked just like a full XP CD.

Yes, as a clean install. I'm talking about using the full as an upgrade.

Ah, (palm to forehead) now I understand. Sometimes the mind 'sees' things differently than the eyes!
