ErnieNow this is advocating/promoting piracy and is not what we do here.
KC1213 you do not understand what you are paying for - the media is esentially worthless, the packaging is also, the manual is not worth much more. You are paying for the development of, the support for (maybe - depending on the version) and mostly - the restricted use of the software per the license agreement. If you do not like the agreement you can take the software back and get you money back per the license agreement. All software that you can buy is the same. This is why the license only prices are not much lower than the whole package price. People need to read agreements - "I bought this software so it is mine" is what most people think, but this is so wrong. You bought the right to use it and nothing more. OK - maybe the technology has gotten ahead of the laws, but this is the way it is now and commiting a crime because you do not think the law is right is not the way to get things changed. Yeah.... ok..... I am getting old........

Oh yes...I DO understand what you are saying..and noooo I do not want to do anything illegal...though I do think it would be ''nice'' of Microsoft to allow me to put their program on my OWN computers, in my OWN home without having to pay the OUTLANDISH price they charge for each. Plus, most softwares we purchase allow free upgrades to newer versions. I paid for Windows 95..98..2000 and XP PRO. And I am sure I will pay for Longhorn. I am not advocating piracy, please understand that...but as I said..it would be nice to be able to buy it once and use it on my computers in my own home. In the end..I will be buying what I am needing now...not pirating it.

While we are on the subject,
Could someone fill me in on how XP works if I would upgrade my system? If I want to get a faster cpu, a new hard drive, more ram, and a new video card, would I run into any problems activating my copy of XP on my newly upgraded system? Thanks. Dave

hehehe,
I hope not either. That gold necklace I gave her for Valentines Day, should be at least worth a new Video Card But of course, I did enjoy the steak dinner and the 10 pounds of candy I got

I've changed video cards before and never had to reactivate.I have a machine with a Soyo board and VIA chipset that has to be reactivated if I go into safe mode.

Hi Shifty,
The biggest thing I was worried about was changing the cpu and the hard drive. Im guessing I would have to call Microsoft to reactivate with those types of upgrades. Not real sure though, so I will do a some research before doing so. Thanks, Dave |

I think that after 3 major components are changed you need to reactivate it. At least that is what I have heard mentioned many times before.

Users can change or upgrade their hardware. One of the forms of piracy that Product Activation guards against is hard disk imaging. Not all forms of hard disk imaging are illegal. In the case where a pirate copies data from one PC hard drive to another to illegally run the software on two PCs, Product Activation stops that by forcing the copied software to be reactivated. It does so by comparing the hardware on which it was activated to the hardware on which it is now being booted. If the hardware is substantially different, then reactivation is required. If it is the same or similar, then the software will continue to work. Those who upgrade their PC's hardware substantially may be asked to reactivate. Reactivation for this reason is easy and can be completed by contacting Microsoft to obtain another confirmation ID |

The thread was about how many computers one license of XP is entitled to. And the answer was clarified as one
This is not a thread about how to defeat WPA. In case you havent read the forum FAQ, read it. |
