Windows 2000 freezes after printing
Have just installed a new Canon i560 printer parallel port LPT2 under Win 2K SP2. Printer installs fine but asa I print anything, after printing a Test Page correctly, the whole system freezes. Totally jammed – have to reboot. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling printer but no change.

Have checked the BIOS and Parallel Port is Bi-directional. Only LPT1 shows in BIOS, as LPT2 is an add-in PCI card. Nothing has changed since I removed the Epson SC 850 from LPT2 and swapped with this Canon. Everything was working fine up until the new printer went in. Have tried letting Windows find the i560 then install the driver but same result.
spoolsv.exe is running as a Process. |

Probably a stupid question but it's always good to check.... any problems in your device manager? Do you have the option to switch ports to your LPT1?

No problems with Device Manager - LPT2 shows up as a PCI ECP parallel port. I think I'll change Parallel Port in the BIOS to ECP, just to see.
I can't switch LPT2 to LPT1 without reconfiguring both printers and Windows. |

Well that was a waste of time. I changed the BIOS Parallel Port to ECP and Windows wouldn't start.
I suppose I will have to install the i560 via a USB port but I'd rather use the LPT2 PCI card. Are there are advantages/disadvantages in USB vs Parallel Port for printers? |

The only disadvantage of USB is its processor usage, the printer performance will be the same. Removing the port card makes sense as it will free up resources.

Installed the i560 with USB - works fine.
Thanks to everyone for their help. Still waiting to hear from Canon. |
