Win2k Pro Gaming
I have Win2k Pro on my laptop and have been trying to get it to work with LAN games and whathaveyou. I have ran into the problem several times of games not being compatible with this OS. Is there something I can do aside from upgrading to XP to get this support? I read someone mention a service pack, but I don't know if I already have it (laptop was given to me not too long ago) and am not at home to check if I have it. Would that help?

If you have the newest DirectX and the newest graphic drive any DirectX game should work in Win2K. I've never had problems with my games in Win2K.

Well, I've gotten error messages that say the game won't run under Windows NT...even though I have 2k Pro...any further ideas?

I wouldn't guess that being a problem with any of the games except maybe Carmageddon 2. I don't know the specs of my video system, but one of the games (don't remember what one) mentioned it not working with Windows NT (even though I have 2k Pro)

I did a search and the game mentioned that it doesn't work with Windows NT is Viper Racing. That game apparently won't work with NT (and 2K Pro is based on NT. . it's a modern NT, Win2K didn't exist when that game was written therefore it doesn't say 2K but NT).
Carmageddon 2 also seems to have problems. These games are maybe not exclusively written for DirectX. Quake 1 and 2 however should run, but maybe the video chip is the problem for these 2 games. Dunno if Viper Racing and Carmageddon will work under Windows XP using the compatibility setting. RJ |

Yes, you need Service Pack 4. The games don't run was problem with NT based OS's, which 2000 is, was solved with it. The fact that the laptop was given to you recently doesn't mean that SP4 was loaded on it.

Cool. Got SP4 to install after downloading the entire 129mb file. Had a few kinks, but went relatively smoothly. Thanks again.

I'll find out more in-depth later on, but so far the only one I tried was the Mission Pack for Quake and that didn't work. I'll try a slew more games later.

Here's the running total so far.
These games didn't work prior to SP4/DX9: Need For Speed II Quake II Carmageddon2 Viper Racing Thief Quake Mission Packs 1 and 2 All of them work now except for Viper Racing and the Quake Mission Packs (no idea why Quake and Quake II work, but the Quake mission packs don't). I believe Viper Racing needs a 3D card and my dated laptop doubtfully has anything remotely decent in there. I'll try a few more this weekend and let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for all the help, once again. Last edited by apollo_jh; 03-26-2004 at 11:18 AM. |

I know only of 1 DOS emulator. It is still in development and quite slow, but well, it works: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dosbox If you just want the DOS sound then get VDMsound: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/ RJ |
