XP last drive assignment

Is there somewhere in XP OS that I can set my last drive assignment that can be used? Ex: Set to use A-Z drive letters?

Drive letters are assigned automatically.

What exactly do you want to do?

You can always right click on My PC and select Manage, then go to Storage and check the drives under Drive Management.

the PC I am working on will only allow drive letters A-G to be assigned. I am trying to access a USB MMC. When it is recgonized it always overtakes the drive I have assigned to G which in this case is a network drive. I believe I can set up in BIOS the first and last drive letter to be used however in this case I cannot access the BIOS. It is locked by password. I was hopping XP had a way to change this set up in the OS

I've never heard of that.

Can you just re-map the network drive after plugging in the USB drive? It may be a pain but at least you'll be able to access it. What USB device is it?

That is actually what we did. My friend who had the issue in the first place swore you could make such changes in the OS and he is allot more knowledgeable in this subject then myself.

Thanks for the replies

If there is a lastdrive statement, it will be in config.nt. XP doesn't use the registry for this.

MS has TweakUI for Xp to hide/unhide drive letters. get it here:

Also, here is MS's take on drive letter assignment

The pre-XP command was:

LastDrive=[insert drive letter here]

which resided in the Config.sys file.

I don't know enough about XP to know if it still works or not, but maybe it will be helpful...

No such restriction in XP, and the BIOS knows nothing about drive letters - they are assigned logically by the O/S. However see this
