Outlook 2002
Hi all,
i came on to following problem. A friend of mine was having problems with outlook. He probably switched several times between outlook and outlook Express; anyway i found 3 pst files in the outlook folder. He really doesn't need the data in it, so i can start fresh and uninstalled office, followed by a reinstall. when i open outlook now, it still requests the pst file that was there originally. (i deleted all pst files) how can i get this outlook on the road from fresh?after the reinstall, i found 2 microsoft office folders, a normal one and one labeled (2). Should i uninstall again or what is the best way to handle this problem? thx noby

noby,
Sounds like the .pst file is still associated with this person's Outlook profile... Is there one profile or are there multiple profiles set up in Outlook? To check: -Right click on the MS Outlook icon on the desktop and select Properties -A list of profiles should appear If you don't have the Outlook icon on the desktop, go to: START>CONTROL PANEL>MAIL -LW |

One profile...okay.
1--Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Mail icon. This opens the Mail Setup dialog box that provides the messaging profile that Outlook is currently using. 2--In the Data Files section, click the Data Files button, and the Outlook Data Files dialog box appears. 3--Click the Add button, and the New Outlook Data File dialog box appears. 4--Under Types of Storage, click Personal Folders File (.pst), click OK, and the Create or Open Outlook Data File dialog box appears. 5--Accept the Outlook folder as the default save location or provide a custom save location. 6--In the File Name box, create a custom name for the personal folders (.pst) file, or accept the default name. Click OK, and then the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box appears. 7--In the Name box, you can type a custom title for the personal folders (.pst) file, or accept the default title of Personal Folders. This name appears on the Folders List, and is applied to any shortcuts made for the personal folders (.pst) file on the Outlook Bar. After you enter your desired settings, click OK. 8--In the Outlook Data Files dialog box, an entry appears for the personal folders (.pst) file that you created. Click Close to close the dialog box. 9--Click Close. That should do the trick..if not, let me know. -LW |

noby,
What exactly is this 'icon Agenda'? If it was a folder created by the person it was likely stored in one of the pst files that were deleted and thus would not be accessible. Let me know... -LW |

sorry about that LW it is the 3rd icon from the top when you open the outlook folder (others are named private or personal and other)i'm running the dutch version see (thats why the translation can be a bit off), and i'll give the names of the others as well:
- Outlook today - Mail in - agenda (or something else) - tasks - notes - deleted items i hope you'll be able to figure it out (could it be diary?) noby |

No problem noby--my guess is that it's the Calendar.
I'll see if I can figure out what the problem might be and respond as soon as possible... -LW |

noby,
What are the names of these PST files? I'm not sure how you have 4 if you deleted 3 already... At any rate, maybe the best thing to do is to import these PST files (if they have information in them) into the new Outlook profile. Please list the names and we'll go from there... -LW |

ok in the folder outlook we have :
outlook.pst outlook2.pst extend.dat personal folders(1).pst there is really no need to import something, everything may be deleted, as long as i can open outlook and all the standard folders in the normal way (say like a fresh install) noby |

noby,
Which one of these files is the one you created? The only reason I mentioned importing them is to avoid having to uninstall and then reinstall Office (but this time deleting both of the Office folders before reinstalling). I think this may causing some problems for the software... -LW |

noby,
No problem... By 'created' I am referring to the process you went through in order to get Outlook to open...you essentially created a new PST file. I'm going to guess that you stuck with the default and it's called 'personal folders(1).pst'. I think it would be a good idea to import the other PST files one at a time to see if that resolves the problem of accessing the Calendar/Agenda. Otherwise, I'd suggest doing an uninstall, delete both Office folders, etc. and then reinstall. -LW |

You're right...it's 8:50 here. What time is it there?
Here is the procedure for importing a PST File: 1--Open Outlook. 2--On the File menu, click Import And Export. 3--Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next. 4--Click Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next. 5--Browse/Type the path and the name of the personal folders (.pst) file that you want to import, and then click Next. Note: You also have 3 options regarding the imported data- Create duplicates, replace duplicates with imported data and do not import duplicates. I normally go with the 'do not import duplicates' option. 6--Select the folder that you want to import, or select the top of the hierarchy to import everything, and then click Finish. Step 6 is where it gets a bit 'tricky'. Here you can choose to import the data from a single folder of the pst file or the entire file. Since everything else is working okay, I would select the Calendar folder to import the data from. Make sure you select 'Import into the same folder in:' option and select the appropriate email account. (You should only have one option here other than one that says 'Personal folders'). Import the PST files one at a time, closing and restarting Outlook and testing the Agenda folder before importing the next pst file. -LW |

Well, I imported the files without trouble, but the calendar still shows the same error message. Can I do something else or would we go from here to the reinstall?
And if I do so, exept the 2 office folders, should'nt I delete the outlook folder also? noby |

noby,
At this point, I would suggest doing an uninstall, removing the 2 Office folders and the Outlook folder, emptying the recycle bin and then rebooting. After reboot, reinstall MS Office. Sorry none of those attempts to fix the problem seemed to work out... -LW |

LW,
now I'm at a loss!! I uninstalled Office, deleted the folders of office and outlook, and finally reinstalled office. However, when i open outlook, it asks for the profile which is outlook, so i click ok, and outlook opens but still says : cannot find the pst file. when i import the pst file (yes I know how) I still have no folders that i can open (blank screen with error message) furthermore it says it cannot find the pst file for the personal folders. Apparently, not everything has been deleted before the reinstall. |

Hmmm...interesting.
You could always make a new profile. Are you using Outlook to access an internet mail account (such as Hotmail) or is it accessing an actual Exchange server? -LW |

Sorry noby...I'm a bit confused.
He is using Outlook just for the Calendar and Outlook Express for his email? And this set up actually worked at some point? -LW |

yes, LW, it worked for almost 3 years
that's why i only want a fresh installation, and no data need to be imported. May be you imply that you have to import the email data? noby |

Okay...didn't realize that he's using 2 separate apps. Why not use Outlook for both?
What PST file is it prompting you for when you open Outlook? -LW |

a file from the previous installation, and i want a clean new installation. i'm rather confused about it. I uninstall, and delete what i know of; and it still keeps prompting me for the things and files i don't want. I did not realize a delete and new install was so difficult....

neither did I!
![]() I just don't understand how he had Outlook working without having it configured for email....honestly, I didn't know or think that was possible. He must have had Outlook configured for something at one point which is why he could still open it and use the calendar. Outlook Express doesn't have the Calendar/Agenda option if I remember correctly. My suggestion would be to configure a new profile and use Outlook for both and not use Outlook Express... Let me know, -LW |

By creating a new profile in Outlook...
1--Close Outlook 2--Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL and click on the 'MAIL' icon 3--Select the 'Show Profiles' button 4--Click the 'ADD' button to create a new profile 5--Follow the instructions in the wizard to set up the profile. In creating a new profile, you will need to set Outlook up to use email. Let me know if you have any questions... -LW |
