Win2k Service Pack 4 Problems
After experiencing problems with gaming on the Win2k Pro platform, it was suggested I update with Service Pack 4. Well, I tried. I did the whole Windows Update thing and I've been given two different error messages *after* downloading the 34 megabyte update. One, the more common error, was 'Invalid Control ID" and the other had to do with some file with an extension I don't recall as I've never seen it before. Both errors would occur after downloading and unpacking. I tried to read up what I could about those errors, and Windows Help says it could be something due to security. So I tried to install all the security updates and I don't think any of them actually installed (out of about 4 seperate installations). And now, I get 3 or 4 dialog boxes when I start up that want to install something and it doesn't tell me what...this concerns me.
I can't think of anything that could be interfering with the installation. Anybody here have any ideas? |

Have to ask - is your Win2K installation from a legit CD?
You may want to try the full standalone service pack install if you have broadband - 125 megs. http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../W2KSP4_EN.EXE |

what service packs do you have on it currently? i've had problems with some machines running windows 2000 pro, where it won't take service pack 4 unless 3 was previously installed.

I have done about 30 or 40 SP4 installs with no problems at all. I always use the full version.

The laptop was given to me by a friend of the family so I have no reason to believe the OS is illegitimate. I've got broadband, so I'll download the full install. I also don't know what service packs are on there currently. In the My Computer properties, it just says Windows 2000 Professional and makes no mention of a service pack. Would it say anything about it anywhere else?

Then it's total baseline - no service packs at all. If it doesn't have IE6, get that first, you will have to use Windows Update to get that. If you are going to game with it, you also need DirectX 9.

Install IE6 first, then SP4. Then go get all critical updates and DX9.
