Win XP restarts-posible driver problem...

Hi, I have dual boot system with Win98 SE and Win XP Home
All the hardware came with my computer. From couple of days I have restarting problems with WinXP(it restarts suddenly with various error messages but the most common are 0x8e and 0x50 with message for problem with the win2K.sys file.
Is it a hardware problem and how can I trouble shoot it.
(Win 98 does not have any problems)

That's a virus/worm. If you don't have an up to date antivirus, go to housecall.trendmicro.com and get a free scan, and when it's cleaned up, get all the XP critical updates.

I'm pretty certain that it is not a virus. That was the first thing to check. I suspect drivers or bad memory problem but I'm not much in the memory problems so I don't know how to trouble shoot it. The system was OK for several months since I bought it and the troubles started in a sudden. I don't have SP1 and most of the latest updatest because I can't stay long enough in the net to download them

If you have more than one stick of RAM, try removing one at a time and running the system.
What kind of Virus check did you run? Did you do the Trendmicro housecall as GLC suggested?

That's classic Blaster worm behavior, and you MUST apply the patch to fix it, even if you have to download it on another computer. This particular patch fits on a floppy.

I've run symantec online scan as well as panda online scan. I have updated Panda Antivirus Titanium and all kinds of spyware and adware tools. I have the Blaster patch and the MS removal tool as well as the Symantec one.I excluded the virus speculation.
I've run MemTest and Memtest86 the first one checked the free ram and found no errors the second one found errors - I have the failing addresses but how can I locate the problem
I have one stick of RAM

Borrow or buy another stick of ram - that's about all you can do.
