Windows XP- USB

Hey All,

I will be installing Windows XP Home edition next week, and I have been hearing some issues with USB support with XP. From what I have read, you need to install SP1, and then do an update driver for the USB. I am wondering for that USB driver, would I just install the USB drivers that are on the motherboard CD or would I choose the M$ update option under driver update.
One more question- Why did this issue occur with XP and not Windows 2000? If 2000 has no problem with USB support(or speeds I should say) then XP shouldn't either.
TIA.

I personally haven't had any problems with USB and Windows XP Original Version (and I have everything USB: Keyboard, Mouse, Joystick, Printer, Digicam). But Windows XP Original only supports USB 1.1, not 2.0.

The USB 2.0 support came with Service Pack 1. With SP1 you won't need the mainboard drivers as WinXP SP1 natively supports it.

How old is your WinXP Home ? If it's not too old then it has the SP1 integrated anyway. If not, I'd slipstream it so you don't need to install SP1 afterwards.

I bought the Win XP Home edition with SP 1.
So it sounds like I am good to go, dont need to install any drivers for USB once SP 1 is installed. I don't know why other people in the forums said to update your USb drivers after you install SP1, when like you said, SP1 comes with USb drivers to support 2.0 .
Aslong as my USB printer and USB keyboard work, I will be happy. Just want to get known problems out of the way.
Thanks for answering RJ. I got one more question. I also heard issues with the Raxio burning software that is in XP? Will this cause problems with my system? I normally use Nero for burning purposes.

I only tried XP's Roxio burning engine once. It was before SP1 was released, and it failed. There have been fixes, and they are included in SP1, but I've never tried it again. I use Nero for burning so I don't need the WinXP engine anyway.

Also now I do remember of an USB problem as I see your motherboard model. I have the P4P800 non-deluxe, and when I installed WinXP (the version with SP1 included) all was fine. After a week Windows suddenly stopped recognizing my USB devices. I tried to reinstall Windows over it, nothing. Then I disabled USB 2.0 in BIOS (so the ports are downgraded to USB 1.1) and then it worked again. As I have no USB 2.0 devices I didn't do a thorough research on why this happened, but it did. So with USB 1.1 I never had a problem, with USB 2.0 I did.
A friend of mine has a different board, also with USB 2.0, and WinXP SP1, and he didn't have a problem. His USB devices all work. Maybe it's a problem with my board but I don't know.

I'll see if I get that problem with my motherboard, I got the delux version. I will also check ASUS forums for the problem you mentioned.
Thanks for the advise RJ.
Well, I just have a USB keyboard and a USB printer hooked up thats all. Will be a problem with my USB external floopy drive that I love to use

Thanks for the input Raftero, but I am looking for somebody that has my motherboard and Windows XP Home edition with USB 2.0 devices.
I have e-mailed ASUS about this issue.
Found the M$ article, and they confirm this issue. All I have to do now is see if my motherboard will show any problems.

It's with usb2 that you'll need sp1 installed first before installing motherboards usb2's drivers.
It's not so much as a problem, more that XP was released prior to usb2,so the OS has to be updated(sp1) to take advantage.
All standard usb devices will work fine.
prior to using the devices, enable usb legacy support in bios, this will let all usb devices work and give you the oppurtunity to install the usb2 drivers.

I haven't had any problems dealing with USB and Windows XP, most of the time it's a problem with the connection when it doesn't work.

I set it on Auto.

And btw you don't install SP1, your Windows XP has SP1 included, means the Windows XP CD already contains all the SP1 files instead of the old ones.

Also I checked it again. Enabled USB 2.0 and it still didn't work. Even with Legacy USB enabled. They stop working just before the Logon box appears, the devices work fine in BIOS. Dunno what is wrong, maybe I gotta check some other BIOS settings.

I downloaded the newest chipset drivers for the board (5.0.2.1003), installed them, activated USB 2.0 in BIOS and now it works

From the changelog:
Features added in Production Version 5.0.2.1002
...
Enabled USB2 on DevID 24CD and 24DD on Windows XPSP1 and Windows Server 2003
...

Still don't know why it worked the first week fine, but well, with the newest driver it works .. . hopefully it doesn't stop working next week
