Question Restoring permissions and fileshares question

G'Day all.
This is my first email. I run a windows 2000 network at my office, and I would like to know if anyone knows of any programs that will backup and restore the shares and permissions on files and folders?

My plan is to transfer these files temporarily from one W2K server to another, then rebuild the initial server, and transfer these files back.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Ford Falcon,

Welcome to PCMech!

The backup you refer to...is it strictly for data? In other words, you just want to transfer a specific data set to another server and nothing else (the other server is identical to the one you are going to rebuild)?

Okay, now some additional questions:

1-How much data are we talking about?

2-Do you have a backup device such as a tape drive already connected/installed on your server?

3-Is the other server already set up and a part of your network?

If the answer to #3 is yes and since it's strictly data you're wanting to backup, then you may want to try just copying the data from 'Server 1' to 'Server 2'.

Regardless of the procedure we end up working out for you, I'd recommend doing some sort of 'test run' to ensure all the data is accessible (by the proper people only of course) before you take the old server down and start rebuilding it.
