upgrading comp - won't activate

Alright finally had the money to upgrade my comp for school and lo and behold once i get everything working...windows goes and screws it up for me.

Old comp:
700mhz athlon thunderbird
3384mb ram
30g hard drive

new comp:
athlon64 obviously a new motherboard
1g ram
80g hard drive

Here's my problem it won't let me activate on this machine, at least not over the internet. Would I have better luck over the phone? Has anybody else had this kind of problem? If I try to install one bit at a time will it help? Say install XP on the hard drive in my old machine and then put the hard drive in the new comp? If I do this will I need to install XP on the hard drive twice or would it even matter that I switched it from one machine to the next?

Cool

When I swapped mobo and HD I had to call MS and activate over phone.

I presume you are not trying to have XP on both HD's and mobo's (ie. two systems).

Nope, i'm taking everything out of this system except the mobo+cpu+ram so couldn't even if i wanted to. Going to use the hard drive out of this system as a backup hard drive. This system is my first and is well over four years old, only been using it since my second system died last semester (could be part of all the xp activation problems, think i had xp on it too, ii'm using a windows xp cd that i got through some software deal microsoft has w/ my school, far as i know it's just as good as a retail copy of xp pro)

I to just changed a motherboard & cpu and had to activate over the phone. It was painless, took 5 minutes and the guy on the other end was very polite.
