Abort Check Disk

Anyone know how to abort a check disk operation in XP? WD test said bad hdd in Compaq notebook, so I decided to run check disk to see if it could be corrected. Now check disk hangs/runs very slowly. I tried holding the power button to force a restart, but Check Disk just reinitializes and runs again.

Have you tried to go into to saffe mode and run it from the command prompt and see if it will clear the run at start-up?

Good idea, but now the darn thing is up to 83 percent complete. Think I'll just let it finish and see if it improves anything. Thanx.
