Unknown files
I have noticed some files "appear" on my hard drive. I have no idea what they are or how they got there. Any help on where they are coming from would be greatly appriciated.
There are several with different create dates. Some file names are just a single letter or character like ~, , @ and €€€€€. All show 0 bytes. Thanks

. . . and if they don't disappear on reboot, do they show up on your desktop? . . . or in a temporary folder?

They do not show up on desktop. All of them have locations of c:\ .
There are about 28 of them. Any way to print screen without a 3rd party app in Win98SE? |

To print screen:
Open the page you want and hold the Alt key and hit print screen (next to F12). Open a text editor (MS Word?) and choose the edit menu and paste. HTH |

Could be a virus on your system, I would scan with AVG and then go to www.trendmicro.com and use their free online virus scanner.

I have Norton AV 2002, last virus def update shows 3/28/04 (liveupdate) and last full system scan was 3/22/04.
Do I need something other than that? |

it is a good idea to do the online scan. programs can become corrupt, even ones that are supposed to fight the corruption. Anti-Virus programs included. The online scan will also verify that you have a clean system.

Fonts folder looks clean, no strange files there. I will delete them...
I guess we'll see what happens. I will also do the online scan. |

Same problem
I too have had a strange file show up in C:\, it's always the same one. I've been having it pop up for several months now. It doesn't do any good to delete it, it just keeps coming back. It doesn't seem to affect the performance of my pc, just annoying not knowing what it is and why its there.
I too would like to get rid of it! |

[. . . and for those forum readers who are too tired to go to the link and read it [
] --> the whole thing concerns a bug in a Security fix for Outlook Express, and the tilde ( ~ ) file is the backup file for the Address Book. . . It's safe to delete, especially if you backup your address book, but it will reappear each time a change is made in the address book (OE backs it up automatically) . . .]

Although we lost an hour this morning, I read it anyway. Kind of interesting really, just another sign my security patches are up-2-date. It was just odd having it come back every time I deleted it. I should re-name it 'stop_deleting_me_i'll_just_keep_coming_back_2_haunt_u.wab"
Thanks guys! |
