Windows 98se/Internet Explorer

I am running Windows 98se and am receiving an error message when trying to open Explorer, which is IE5. I know I need to get this upgraded to IE6. However, the message is "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module at 0000:03e14506"

The home page in Explorer is set to res://mshp.dll/index.html#27859 I can change this to blank, but I cannot make it a webpage.

I can surf the web in AOL, and when I go to Windows update and try to update my Explorer to IE6 it does the download, but it does not do the install. It just stops and sits there.

I ran a program called PC Doctor OnCall and it gave me a list of errors that are on my system, I am only concerned with the .dll's can anyone help me? I am attaching the errors, but here is the ones I am looking at trying to fix, at least I think they are the ones I need to fix.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\disktool.dll
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\INFOWINDOW.DLL
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\BDE\IDAPINST.DLL
C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\\cmgrdian.hlp

And what are these files?????
RunBat2.pif
addreg2.pif
LRepair.pif
remove.pif

Any help is greatly appreciated.

.pif files contain viruses. Usually recieved through e-mails.

If you have web access with AOL surf along here and do an online virus scan:

Let us know what it finds.

Hi LovesFe2,

"PIF" is a shortcut to run DOS and other programs. It tells Windows how to handle the program to be more compatible with Windows. For example, say you had a DOS game, Hexan.exe, you'd also have a file called Hexan.PIF so Windows knows how to run Hexan.exe.

Search for anything containing the file name part, for example search on "runbat2*.*" to find what's on your computer with that name. If they are programs you uses, great. If not, hide them in a different directory to see if anything tries to run them. It would be the program itself that may or may not contain bad things...

Also, McAfee programs are well know for causing all kinds of problems. If it were my system, I'd get rid of all McAfee programs as a starting point. When I did so, a lot of my problems disapeared.

After getting rid of McAfee, then you can try repairing or upgrading IE.

HTH

I would stick with IE5 if you get it working right - IE6 on 98 is a 50-50 proposition - it either works well or it's disaster.
