I had a spywear problem on a Win98SE machine and after removal, the PC was a little wobbly so I decided to do the old setup /p f to reinstall Windows without rebooting.
All seemed well until I tried Outlook Express which refuses to fire up. I get a message about msoe.dll which I've replaced without luck. The PC is running IE6 latest version and I think the problem is that the reinstall has reloaded OE5 and confused everything! I've tried the fixes suggested at Microsoft.com and I'm scratching my head here - I've even reloaded IE6 from the MS website without luck. Between the three of you, I have normally managed to fix most things - can you help on this one? TIA |

Sorry, I'm not a software guy and don't have any suggestions for you (I normally avoid all threads dealing with Internet Explorer and Outlook or Outlook Express problems).

I probably would rip IE and OE out of the registry and off the hard drive and do another "over the top".
You'll end up with 4, but it will work enough to do the upgrade to 6. The usuaal warnings apply. And I have never done it with these items so I don't know the full ramifications. But the OTTs I've done have been very successful at filling in the blanks that I've created. |

If it's any help, Windows Update doesn't work either - it freezes on 0% during the 'scan for updates' section.
TIA |

Try reverting IE back as far as it goes with add/remove programs - 98SE came with 5.0. Then try installing the full 5.01SP2 download from http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.01_SP2 and do a custom install - force it to install Outlook Express. Then if it works, leave it alone - IE6 and 98 is a crapshoot.
