Computer takes long time to startup

Whenever I turn my computer on it loads on the blue screen for like 3 min before it starts. It has been like that ever since I got the computer. Is it supposed to be that way?

HP Pavilion a340n
WinXP
2.60GHz
512mb ddr ram
P4

Hello EM199SI,

The more programs you have starting up, the slower the boot up. This can also happen if your on a network.
Search for a program called Bootvis. Download it. Run it. Tell it to optimize the startup, and let us know from there.

Three minutes is, imho, excessive. Some people swear by Bootvis and others say it causes problems. Try going to control panel-folder options-view and unticking the first box, "Automatically search for network folders and printers."

It seems like it didn't do anything. The Blue start-up screen still takes long.

Have you downloaded and installed a bunch of Fonts? This is one thing that can really slow up the boot on a computer.
Also McAfee Anti-virus can also cause a slow boot.
BUt the majority of the time the slow boot is caused by multiple Adware/Spyware start-ups.

Here's my suggestion. Run msconfig and check the programs selected for startup. Check them at this site for recommendations. HP's a famous for having a bunch of unneeded stuff running in the background. If your Anti virus is anything other that Norton, I'd dump it and use AVG Free instead. I hate McAfee. Here's the link:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

The bottom of the page has a link to the status key codes. Read them first so you know what to turn off. Good luck.

I posted a program in the tweaks section.. It's called GameXP... It shuts down some of the un needed services (if you want) and optimizes your xp settings...
