Argh Windows XP

Alright, so I've built my system quite nicely with no apparent problems on the hardware side of things. I'm using a windows XP installer on CD that originally came with a Dell PC. So on boot up everything goes fine and it goes to a blue screen where it starts to load installation files as could be expected. Everything gets loaded all fine, and the final message is, "Setup is loading Windows..."

This is where it just ends. Nothing at all happens from this point. I stripped it down to the bare essentials in terms of hardware. I have a couple theories but the problem could be so many things I have no idea where to start. BIOS seems completely perfect as far as I can tell, but the problem may lie in the fact that the Dell the disc was supplied with required some sort of very meticulous settings that I'll never figure out. I'd really like to see if I can get this working before I go buy XP home edition in all its entirety.

Any help is appreciated muchly.

Welcome to PCMech. Im not sure if a dell xp home cd could work. it might though, im just guessing. if a dell installation cd is the same as a normal xp cd, it should logically work.

If that is a Dell cd for a Dell PC then it will only work on a Dell PC and you will need to get a legal copy to install on the new PC.

Welcome to PCMech candanavian!

If the CD is a Dell recovery CD, then it probably won't work due to the hardware differences...my guess is that it won't because the CD was created for use with a Dell machine.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I have feared all along that my system would not match the specifications required by this Dell CD. I think I'm going to go ahead and buy a legal copy of XP home, which will hopefully work fine. Thanks again.

Even the full XP Cd's that ship with Dells can only be used to install XP on a Dell, because they are keyed to a Dell bios. Not only is reuse a violation of the license agreement, they have made it physically impossible to do so.
