New system setup

I have just finished building a new system for the first time. It is ready for an initial power up but at this point I'm unsure of the sequence to use. In what order should BIOS setup, updates and Windows upgrade be done? My older machine has 98 so I'm upgrading to XP Pro on the new machine. I just want to make sure I'm doing these in the right order.

The system has a P4 3.0, Intel mobo, 1G RAM, and 2 SATA drives I want to config in RAID 1.

Can anyone explain the initial steps better? The Intel online documentation is a little confusing to me and seems to be out of sequence at times.
Thanks...
