Help Quick Please - Installing 98 on old Gateway
I have a friends computer here and I am trying to reinstall Windows 98. It wasn't even functional in safe mode. I reformatted by typing in "format c:" in the dos prompt. Now the boot sequence is set to CD-ROM but it says "invalid system disk". It has been a long time since I installed Windows 98 from scratch. What do I need to make this work? The computer is an old PII Gatway and that's about all I know.

Use the boot disk to boot with CD support. At the A:\ prompt type "c:\". At the c:\ prompt, type "setup". It should find the setup file on the cd and begin the install.

I don't have a boot disk. I tried making one that I downloaded from bootdisk.com says "the current image format is not supported by the disk drive".

Are you trying to install 98 First Edition? I know Second Edition CD's are bootable. Not sure about FE. How did you run the format C command without a boot disk?

I managed to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. From there I typed that command. Now I don't get any command prompt. Just the invalid system disk message. It is Windows 98 SE.

Ok, back to basics. You'll need to do an fdisk command with a boot disk in order to set an active primary partition before the CD will install. Make sure you download a 98se boot disk. Here's a great site for clean install.

Thank you for the site but I don't have a computer running Windows 98. I need a downloadable boot disk that works.

Well I seem to have found a working boot disk. Now the directions on that site say to format drive c after running fdisk. Do I have to do it again?

Well I didn't format C again and now when I type in "r:setup" it says "Please wait while Setup initializes. Scanning system registry". Then a W show up under that and it does nothing.

Well after rebooting again it said "Windows setup requires x # of MB's to install" so I decided to format C again. It is formating now.
