Windows XP and mapped drives
Anyone familiar with a message like this on a Windows XP machine trying to access a mapped drive?
"microsoft windows network: the local device name is already in use. this connection has not been restored." It seems to be specifially related to one user on the computer but if I log onto another computer as that user it works fine. Never mind got it fixed. I found out that this was related to a mistake that I had done much earlier on when the machine was first set up. When I had setup the hard drive to be shared, I changed the permissions of the "Everyone" user. (under the Security tab of the sharing properties.)
I had run into a few other problems on other machines that had this same setting changed, so I thought I should double check to see if this one had my mistake and it did. Once the setting was changed back I was able to proceed to connect back to the mapped network drive. One thing I can't figure out is... how this worked without any problems for close to a year then finally one day it stopped. Anywasy things are working fine right now so don't try and fix what ain't broke. :P |
