Windows 95 Modem Issue

Hey everybody,

I was at my uncle's house the other day and he had trouble with Windows 95 machine. It seemed like the modem was having trouble initializing a dial tone(We tried different phone lines, etc) . So I removed the drivers, rebooted the PC, and it didn't recognize new hardware at startup..I ran the add new hardware wizard, found nothing. Shut the computer down, removed the modem and put it back in..turned on the computer..found nothing..what are some issues that can be causing for the modem not to be recognized? This is an old system, I dont even know the system specs..I told him to buy a new modem. TIA.

Hi Matt - sorry it took so long for my reply (going on vacation next week, busy getting things done)

If he buys a new modem, he'll be OK as long as his cpu is P166 or better (for the WinModem "controller-less" or "Host Signal Processor" type - if it's a hardware modem, no troubles).

If you or he want to try the oldie again, see if you can find the make/model numbers on it, or perhaps the FCC number. Google or driversguide.com might point you to an installation applet & driver that will do the trick.

. . . they sell those WinModems either for free (via rebate) or for $5 at the local shops around here. . . The hardware models start around $20.

The modem may not be a plug and play modem, it may be a jumpered ISA modem. You have to go to Modems in control panel and add the modem there, let it search. It should find a modem on one of the com ports if this is the case.
