windows xp upgrade/full

My first question is is there a way to install windows xp upgrade without a prevous version of windows. if so how. second question is there a difference between yhe upgrade and full version

No, you cannot do a clean install using a upgrade version without a qualifying OS for it to check. You can upgrade a running OS without the CD.

Operationally there is no difference. Full version (or OEM) will do a clean install without a qualifying OS CD. Upgrade requires a qualifying OS CD to do a clean install.

Think you can, Chas. I just used an XP Pro Academic Upgrade on a new build for my daughter. You just insert the XP disk as a boot disk like any new install and it will ask you for a valid previous version. Remove the XP disk, insert the previous (in my case 98se) disk, then switch them once the older os is recognized. If you aren't a college student or other qualified user which would allow you to buy this XP Pro at a nice discount ($86 at Newegg right now), then stick with the full OEM version.

edit: Just reread your post, Chas. I think we're both saying the same thing. My mistake
